Surely there would be autos made in between?

This configuration of car (manual 540i) had the first part of the vin number being unique, and just the last 2 digits equal to the production number.

http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=17567 check this post of nic_s, it is his car that i bought after wishing for it for 3 years since i saw it for the first time. All i did since i got it 2 weeks ago was rear discs and pads; new fuel tank; k&n filter; viscous and blades; and new alpine radio. maybe next few months will see a respray cause the clear lacquer is peeling and the rust nic_s talked about is still there.
