At some stage in it's life it was run without antifreeze and thats what happens.

What about welding it?
That must have been what happend....
Im so descusted, because The AGENTS don't really want to service these old vehicle no more, so what happens is, you take the car to the AGENTS, and the agent take the car to someone els (Have proof) for service.

Some incompodent idoit must have changed the coolant with water :)argh:)

Even if it was possible to weld it up, the block must also be rusted in places I can not see with the blind eye, I don't want to have any more problems.

I hate to be the one to say this, but BMW sending the car to someone else to do repairs is probably the best thing they can do as they a pretty useless when it comes to actual proper mechanic work, though in this case it showed that the the independent place was even was more useless than BMW, which rare.
Maybe we need some name and shame, if you know which place it was sent to.

Acctually I know, The car was sent there for the major service & we spent a shit load of money on replacing all front suspension bushes and stuff, Same place. BUT to be fare, It does help that i only name the last place car was sent to. Ill take the service book and name all the places cars was services the last 20 years?

Hello All,

I did a bit of shopping arround for a IMPORT MOTOR,

And Japanise Imports seem to be the best dealS.

But have a question or 2...

Current engine is a M30B35 engine, that produced 155KW & 305NM of torque when new...

I can get a B11 3.5 (Alpina) engine for her. Did some research, and it will fit like a glove. But I don't really want to create new problems for the future, example Auto gearbox. because the Alpina engine stats are as following:
187 kW & 325 N·m torque (When it was new...)

Any comments (Do's or don'ts) will be apreciated...

B10 motor had Mahle 10:1 compression pistons , gasflowed head , reprofiled cam , remapped ignition system , cast tubular exhaust manifold . this gives 187 kw at 6000 and 325 nm at 4000 revs .
January 1991 Car magazine tested the B10 3.5 - based on 535i manual .The increase in power made 0-100 about 1 second faster , 182km/h after 1 km (12 km/h faster ) , top speed about 11 km/h higher and 13.8 l/100km consumption .
Hope your motor gives good service .

So did you actually fit the B10 engine?

No I actually didn't fit the B10, I decided agains it and Fitted a original M30 engine. Im not really willing to pay an extra R 10 000 for a mere 20KW differance, I was conserned about the autobox not coping too. The car is in very good nick and we intend to keep it that way... Spending a shit load of money so far.

Hi,
Sounds like a problem I had a year ago, anyhow, the rocker arm had to be replaced, but with the overheating other problems developed. I got a guy from JR Cylinders to do the job, brilliant, and no more overheating problems.
He is in Wynberg Jhb, phone number 011 440 6046 - Wayne is his name

Are you physically losing water that you are not seeing.

Did you do a combustion gas test of the existing water. It could be that you are either losing water into the combustion chamber through a cracked head. May not always appear on a pressure test.

Couls also be that its leaking straight onto the exhaust and burning up before you see it.

2 Years Later, & the car developed the same problem as before, Loosing coolant again. (Same as before)

Decided to SELL IT AS IS, Can not afford buying and replacing an engine every 2nd year.

It really does seem like it could be an M30 issue on these older models.
Miss her a lot, but its how it must be

sorry to hear! i have had a e32 730i v8 now for around 2 months.. also decided to buy as a 2nd car... i also spent a crapload going over EVERYTHING...

but i must say it was worth it, she went on the dyno this weekend and got 152kw and 260nm. factory specs is 160 and 290.

great cars these when they run well. i just have some shimmy i still need to sort out and i need to finally crack the rear self levelling suspension. rebuilt the shocks. relaced the bombs.. but the car doesnt lift..

where could you source this alpina b10 and what was the cost?

Very good cars indeed, car ran very well. When car started using water again - That was the final straw!!!!! Sad, Because car had FSH & less 232 000KM on the clock.

We also had a self leveling issue, IT actually did lift, but pumped up the suspension TOO hard. The ride quality was extremely hard (Only rear)

In 2011 they had a B10 there for R18 000

yeah the self levelling seems to be a bit of a pig to get right, everyone seems to run away from it and do the conversion to regular setup...

for me, id like to restore this one and get it riding just like when it left the showroom floor.
