BMW Double VANOS

Hi Guys :)

New to this forum.

I have a friend with a 1999 BMW E46 323i who is looking a new Double VANOS.

We have found a few, but they're ridiculously expensive, does anybody have any ideas where the best place to find one would be?

Or a place that can recondition one?

Your help is much appreciated :)

Have you physically taken the VANOS apart and inspetced which part may be the cause?

Only reason im asking as that it may be something as stupid as one of the springs that works with the solenoid that wont open and let oil in. Or even just the VANOS seals which you can buy from Axis for less than R1 000.00. Have you checked the solenoids to the VANOS?

I personally have not, as it not my car.

But it is with a mechanic that informed us about the VANOS needing replacement.

I will forward this on, thank you :)

to be honest, i've not heard of the entire VANOS failing, but i stand to be corrected.

there are parts inside there that fail, and i've disassembled quite a few now. theres not much in there besides the seals on the pistons that ChrisBrand spoke of, the two big springs, and the two solenoids that sit on either side.

It's usually just the seals that need replacing, that is provided that the Vanos chambers and pistons are terribly scored from completely worn out seals.
