BMW Dealer Part Repalcement

Hello Fanatics.

Recently I had an issue where my aux cable tip broke off in my aux port and lodged itself inside the aux port. I took out the unit and attempted to shake the piece out but it wouldn't budge. I tried taking the box apart only to find that it does not help the situation.

Eventually I took it to my local bmw dealer to see if they could get it out. I left it there for the morning and they told me it had to be replaced and quoted me R1000 for the new part. I said it was fine and the part would be delivered the following week.

That night I decided just to put a thin screw driver in and wiggle it around (had never done this as I was scared to damage it) and about a minute later the piece popped out. I tested it and it works perfectly.

Now the problem is that the dealer phoned me and said I am obliged to buy the part now since it is in there part department and connected to my vin number(all that bull) even though I do not need it? Is this true ?

Luckily it's not ridiculously expensive but I don't want to donate R1000 for something I don't need?

i dont see how they can force you to take it. You should be able to cancel the order.

agreed, but you probably find they have ordered the part especially for him which is why they want him to pay for it

cant you dispute it because they told you the part needs to be replaced. i doubt that they even tried to get it out.

No one can force you to pay it. They did not follow procedure of making you pay for it first before ordering it from the warehouse.

Have you already paid? At the very most they should only charge you a restocking fee. And cannot force you to take the part.

They were probably lazy and didn't bother trying to get the broken aux plug out the socket and they took the easy way out by telling you that a new part needs to be ordered. :thumbdo:

If you haven't paid yet, don't pay, ask them why they told you the part needed to be replaced when in actual fact it didn't.

BMW dealers clearly think bmw drivers have money growing on tree's .

If it wasn't a stock item, they can still put it back in stock, correct me if i am wrong, however doesn't the consumer act protect customers over things like this?

I would'nt pay, at best offer to pay a restocking fee if you care for the relationship if not...why bother.

Same thing happened with me when I ordered M performance side stickers for wife 320. Wife afterwards decided not to fit and requested a refund on part as she did not take delivery yet.

They informed her that since the part was ordered against the vin they couldn't do a refund.

At end of the day they didnt realize who they were dealing with and she recieved a full refund:tiptoe:

So tell them no

Firstly they misled you into thinking you needed a new part and so you asked them to order it. They were the experts to advise you. You acted on their advice. Then you fixed the problem yourself. They induced you to order the part. Now that you don't need it, tell them to f@$& off.

Honestly, why are you asking for advice here? This is standard stuff that you have to deal with in everyday life. It doesn't only apply to car parts.

Speak to a manager and find out exactly what their stance on this is. There is no way you should be forced to take the part but you have to accept responsibility for them incurring expenses in procuring the part and should be liable for such expenses.

This is just like a game of Scruples.

I will never understand why people have to be so condescending when answering questions on discussion forums.

The question is do I have any leg to stand on by denying the payment of the part or is it not my choice and can something else be arranged. I am a young guy still new to many things and it is not general knowledge to me on what the proper procedure is here. Plus I dont think it general knowledge to most people how generic parts are assoicated to a car's vin number and thus cannot be used on another car exactly the same. So I think it perfectly fine to ask 'advice' here.

Anyway, I spoke to my service advisor and he said I must come chat with the parts department and I shall do so tomorrow. I don't not want to take the part for the reason that they did such a lazy job trying to fix it but I will however I will offer a restock penalty.

Thanks for all the input.

You're not obliged to pay for the item, if it were a special order then they should have taken a deposit or the full payment upfront to protect themselves against this scenario.

Agree with the above

If the part is warehouse stock, they should be able to return it without question.

If it was a special order then the parts guy must have taken at least a deposit, or usually full fee up front.

If he did not, the parts guy may be held liable for it which is why he is spinning you the bullshit.

The part being linked to your vin number is crap, that most likely is not really a serialized part anyway, so if not booked under motor plan....

You technically have no obligation.

However, next time you do something like this, just go buy the part from MD house for R300 or something daft...

BMW Dealers need more clients like you, so they can stop messing around the guys who aren't all that clue'd up when it comes to their cars. I had endless issue's with the dealers as they thought I didn't have a mechanical background and that I would accept any answer they gave me...:RedNo:

For those interested, the matter had been resolved.

I emailed the dealership a while ago and told them why I was denying payment of the part and that I am quiet annoyed that it could be fixed so easily. But I offered a restock penalty fee or a possible resolution.

The dealership replied with an apology for the mistake and decided to give the part to me for free on behalf of the dealership due to me and my family being loyal customers for years.

I told them I don't need the part but they insisted so I got a bran new aux port from today.

Really happy with the dealership and will remain a loyal customer for years to come. Shout out to Leo haese Centurion.
