BMW 330i 2003 e46 is ill

Hi there

I have a 2003 330i with about 110,000km on the clock, had it for about 3 years since about 82,000km - all these kilometers have been major problem free. I am based in South Africa. I've replaced power steering pump, thermostat, radiator cap and expansion tank.

Car was running beautifully until about 2 months ago. It started feeling unresponsive, the exhaust note changed (sounded laborious), sometime when accelerating from still the revs drop before taking up and even sometimes it cuts out. Then sometimes this goes away and car feels okay, but now mostly everyday it's like this.

Had it serviced 2 weeks ago, oils, filters etc (i thought it was air filter being problem), its been tested diagnostics etc and mechanic (private, not BMW mechanic) said it was okay. Was fine after that, but today it started again, not happy, also no idea where to start troubleshooting this lack in performance. On other forums i get asked codes, suggesting MAF, DISA, intake boots etc. Is there a good BMW mechanic to recommend (I am in bryanston area).

Another thing, when in normal drive mode (I have sportpack tiptronic), when slowing down to traffic lights (as an example) the gearbox seems to "thud" into first - its always done this, thought it was normal but it seems to be getting worse. It doesnt do this when in sport mode.

My 330i is at the stage where i should probably sell based on economic sense but also i am hugely sentimental and attached to it (ive been threatening to sell for almost a year now but cant!).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

if you get a code print out it would help alot because it could be alot of things... hopefully someone can help you find a good mech in bryanston :)

My guess would be the cats too. They might be clogged.

On the gearbox issue, I would suggest an oil change. I used to have the 1st gear thud on my diesels, but never on the petrol BM's.

I am sure diagnostics should have picked it up, things to look at could be cam position sensors, MAF, and coil packs, also how does the car idle? If it is erratic, it could also be a vacuum leak.

Can't really comment about the gearbox though.

And welcome to the forum

Might I also add, that you should try and avoid selling the car, as if you do you will probably end up having to settle for some horrid eco-box, and the 330i is just an awesome machine, this is just my opinion of course :)

Agreed, dont sell the 330. Your going to get R2.50 for it in this climate, and your not going to be able to replace it with anything suitable.

From what you desribed, there could be a couple of issues, key in my view would be MAF, followed by crank/cam's sensor.

I would suggest using a proper BMW diagnostics.

THe simplest of tests that you can do, unplug the MAF and see if it changes your car significantly.

I have also read about sludge in a motor whereby the sludge is so bad that the sensors cannot deliver what they are supposed to...

Hey guys - sorry i went "dead" after this post - ended up shooting off on a holiday.

Didn't fully get the problem solved - it seemed to come and go but after a good service definitely drove better.

Ended up selling her - main reason was felt like a change and also wasnt keen on the auto box for a long term own... in hindsight.... you guys were completely right.. I'm pining big time. Need some real get up and go and german engineering (I'm currently driving my nissan patrol 4.2 diesel as a daily!!)

Trawling for another 330i, manual this time, or also very keen on the e36 M3 !!

Going to take my time and find the right deal.....

Andrew you talking about Boss Auto? Max there couldnt pick up anything on his diagnostics.... assured me everything was 100%.

I've been to RU a few times, trying to recognize your name!
