Best dealer to try fix underpowered F20 118i

Hey all,

Thanks for all the advice in the past.

I sadly parted with my 2003 Cooper S - what a legend of a car and bought a 2012 F20 118i manual "msport" with 30k on the clock

Car looks great but is so boring to drive wow. I had some drive train faults that lyndhurst auto took their time in getting right (took 3 returns to get it right) and shoddy service, so not going back there. I remember when they used to be a premium dealership.

Anyway long story short - while my car was there the last time, I had now insisted on a loan car, and was given a std spec 118i auto - but the power in this car was unreal (in context), and that's when I realized that something is wrong with my car - it's slow and heavy on fuel.

Question - which dealer is going to be best with trying to fix this car ? Or should I really just sell it. Feeling a little disappointed with the brand at the moment.

Thanks all,

Darren

Just a side note:
Could the difference be the 6 speed man vs 8 speed auto?
The auto has more gear ratio's so will accelerate much better than the manual.

It will always be in the 'correct' gear and have a longer top gear ratio... All contribute towards better fuel economy vs the manual.

Thanks 444YYY, agreed and good logic. However I was comparing in gear pull - and even there my car is far more sluggish

Thanks e36monk3y will give them a shout have heard good things

You have every right (in principle nevermind legally due to motorplan!) to have this sorted out.

I traded my 118i manual in at the end of December with 30000 odd kays on the clock, and it was never close to sluggish. In fact, it was a really quick car in relative terms. Yours should be as well.

Yes, the 8spd auto box is marginally quicker (I have one now in the X3 I traded in for), but it makes less than half a second difference in 0-100 terms in the real world, so the difference shouldn't be *that* noticeable. My 1er's torque from low down was always great, so much so that it was an amazing car to drive in a very relaxed fashion in high gears. It's one of the points I always told friends about when they asked about the performance.

Unfortunately I don't know much about the dealers up North, but I hope you get this resolved soon!

Have a 118i 6speed manual too.. It's nippy and should really have some proper kick between 4-6k rpm... JSN motors are also a good bet! Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

Thanks d2coza, that was my experience with the auto - it was actually quite a lot of fun to drive. Look I know this engine doesn't make huge power but it was actually pretty quick. When I got back into mine it felt like a 116i. Strange you mention low down torque because my car nearly stalls in second if I go over a bump or something. I think I there is a problem with the VANOS, but they keep cleaning / replacing exhaust solenoids as im sure the cost is VERY different. Shoddy from BMW.

Thanks coldfusion, i heard JSN were good too. Apparently the independently owned dealers are the ones to deal with.

Hey all, just wanted to update this thread and will post in the main forum as well as the service I received from Peter (service advisor) and Grant ( service manager) at JSN is beyond excellent and is an example of what BMW service should be. Absolutely great, from keeping me updated to the progress of the car, to replacing my steering shaft (which I didn't even request). I'm very impressed.
