To those 80s kids, you know what I am talking about.
The original 1988 Christmas classic - Die Hard.
It is now a tradition that I watch it every Christmas eve.
Even though it is 30 years' old, it still holds up brilliantly against the newer action movies out there. Also, it is one of the few old movies that look good in full HD, even with motion smoothing on ("soap opera video effect") - I think this is due to the cinematography by Jan de Bont, who emphasised old school camera lens flares.
Die Hard 2 is also a Christmas themed movie, but does not have all the special nuances (memorable quotes, interesting villain) of the original. But, it does have bigger action set pieces.
Die Hard 3 is good, but is more like Speed in New York, without the bus. Still, a good movie.
The less said about Die Hard 4 (borders recent Fast and Furious lunacy) and 5 (disregards physics and logic entirely), the better. Though, I did enjoy the Russian freeway chase scene in 5.
