I've got a Panasonic VL2020 in my E46 remote. Had some trouble finding it. (Actually I am still looking... :( )

Does the E36 remote clip open, cause I had to cut the E46 remote open with a SHARP carpet knife and then you have to superglue it back together. Oh, and the battery gets soldered in there too.

If you have the code of the battery, go to any big pharmacy or photographic shop. Sure they will be able to assist.

E36 battery = consumable item. E46 battery permanent rechargeable = charges when in the ignition. In an ideal world, should last the lifetime of the car (which, if in European terms, is 5 years!) That's when some of us buy our Bimmers!!!!

hmm, strange, my 540i's key is still original and its still working 100%, almost 10 years old now. dunno bout the E36's remote, but I know most after at least 97 or 98 are rechargeables, I guess their soldered in sothat most people can't replace them and force you to buy a new key ! and charge you to reprogram it also. its all about the money I guess. but damn, bmw's are insane, so nuff said.

Batteries.... dont even get me started! My wife got a quote for a new battery for the garage remote, R215!!!! A new remote with a "free" battery is R150!

Go to a specialist battery place. They are all over. They should be able to match up a battery for anything! I've replaced batteries on my office cordless phone for R150.00 when Siemens wanted R1000! There are people who will "make up" batteries for ANYTHING for you in NiMH, NiCd, Cobalt, Dry acid, etc, etc. Even flexible batteries! Google it, I'm sure Cape Town and Joburg must have those...even PE has!

Im DEF goign to check elsewhere! Sorry BMW :nono:

Zeemax did however mention to me that, when i open the clip at the back of the key i have 60 seconds to replace the battery as the key will lose it's memory after that...

Just to update everyone - Like i mentioned earlier, BMW charge R125 per battery - my wife was just at GAME STORES and they sell the same battery for R15 :excited: It's a CR2016 battery:thumbsup:

Now just to get the clip open at the back of the key and all should be good...

that battery is the same as a PC motherboard battery:dunno:???

I've got a 2032 in my PC. The 2016 might work, but will it last as long. Then again at R15 a pop compared to R125, you can change it a couple of times. But this again is only for the E36. On the E46, you have to cut open the fob and glue it back together, so rather make sure you get the right one!
