Auto gearbox service

Hi guys. I need some advice as I am now getting more confused by the day. It regards auto gearbox servicing.
On my 325, after much reading on international sites it seemed that it was a good thing to do. So, I went off to ZF Services, ( after all they are the manufacturers) They also discussed and debated and then decided that it was a good thing to do. Which was done. G/Box flushed, new pickup sieve, sump cleaned and refilled with ZF longlife 5 synthetic fluid. And I must say, the box has and is performing beauts.
Now comes the X5 and off I go to ZF again. They take a sample of the g/box oil and tell me that it's very black but does not appear to be burnt or have any heavy contaminants in it however, as the car has done 130,000K's and has never had the g/box serviced that they don't think it's a good idea and that if they do service it, the box may pack up in the near future. So we left it all alone.
The other day I went to Bruce's in Kennilworth, here in Cape Town as I have a small leak from a pipe at the front of the engine area. Looks like a power steering pipe that is leaking and they're going to sort it out on Monday. Now comes my conundrum. They had a look at the power steering fluid and reckon that it's quite dirty but that they will clean out the system and refill with clean oil when they do the oil leak repair but also asked if I'd ever had the gearbox serviced. I then told them about the ZF servicing story and the response was that I definitely should get the box serviced. They will flush it and refill with new synthetic fluid on Monday and have never heard of a box failing due to an oil change.
Now, changing oils makes good sense to me but, I keep hearing the ZF guy's voice in my head and the words "gearbox failure". Now I don't know which way to jump.
Come guys, what do you all think. What would you do?
The box right now works fine but I did look at the latest oil sample as well and boy it's black. It doesn't smell bad but surely dirty oil is not good?

Have heard of boxes failing due to bad oil but never due to clean oil.
Besides what is this nonsense of "Life Oil" what is the definition of life 3 years 4 years 1 000 000km?

I remember reading somtin somewer that if box was never serviced then by flushing it the clean oil can wash out debris which was sorta keepin things in there tighter and wen it's flushed out causes some probs...other thing they say is if debris is dislodged that it can somehow get lodged somewer els in the box and cause damage..but these are myths..dono if anyone can prove..
I would like to know how your car goes..my E36 is low on box oil and they stopped producing dextron 3 it seems..(if anyone knows what replacement oil I can use please let me kno ty)..but the gasket is leaky so need to flush and I also came across this..

My wife's X3 had a small oil leak from the gearbox selector shaft seal at around 140000km. The mech (ex-Menlyn Auto workshop foreman) replaced the seal, but he just topped up the oil and explained that he does not recommend flushing and replacing the oil, he has seen too many failures.

I guess there is always a chance of some dirt getting into the box if the oil is replaced under general workshop conditions while it is in the car. In a proper work environment, with the box out of the car, it make sense that any accidental dirt ingress can be avoided when the box is refilled.

Don't do it! The GM box does not like it when you change the fluid when it is worn. Within 1000km or so, shifts will become jerky, and it will fail sooner due to the clean oil having lower friction and pressure. The fact is, that the damage is already done if the oil looks like that, and it is only a matter of time then it will need to be rebuilt, and by changing the oil, you are speeding up the process.

But if you do not take my advice, please post back here when she is in for a rebuild.

Excellent posts from about everyone. Making great sense. No wonder from much older vehicles' service books they never tell you to change gearbox fluids.

Thanks chaps. Yeah, it makes sense that if the oil is that dirty then the damage has already been done. Now, decision time. Seems as though I might as well flip a coin on this one as there appears to be a 50/50 chance of it being a good thing to do or having the box fail in the near future. EISH!!!!!
I guess there is also some good sense in the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" I'll make a decision today and let you guys know what happens, if anything, and depending on which road I take on this one. On the 325, the box is perfect and has behaved perfectly since it's service a few thousand K's ago.

OK, just a little update. I had a call from the garage and they tell me that it's going to be R4500-00 to flush the gearbox and refill it. So that kinda does it for me. It can just stay exactly as it is and carry on working exactly as it is. I'll worry about it if/when it gives hassles. Car needs a new power steering pipe which entails new fluid in the pump and two new tappet cover gaskets due to leaks. They tell me that the lower control arms need replacing as there are no serviceable parts for them. That is, bushes aren't available as separate items. R2500 per side. So that is also on hold until I can do some more research. Otherwise it's good. The power steering repair is going to be around R400-00 and the lower control arms about R2500-00 a side. That is parts and labour prices. My tyres aren't wearing and the last time I had the alignment done, nobody said anything about worn suspension bits. Maybe I need to get a second opinion. So folks, I won't be able to tell you all whether servicing the box was or wasn't a good idea.
Thanks for everyone's input though.

Thanks very much for that. Now I know that I can hunt down some suitable parts.
This forum is great.
