 You sure all the wires is back in and connected? I know that after I changed the brakepad sensors, the light cleared by itself.

Could it be that the car registered a possible tamper? Disconnect the battery for 15 odd minutes, reconnect and see if that makes a difference.

my main concern is , what effect does it have on the car over a period of time , and what could go wrong with the car in the time that the light is on ?

My mistake was thinking of something else.
Here's what I could find.

First, try a complete vehicle fault code clearing. If this does not help, re-boot the ASC module by disconnecting your battery or the cable connector to the ASC for approximately 20 minutes. Actually, you can do both simultaneously.
If the ASC light still comes back, then it needs coding no matter what others say. Then clear fault codes again.

I know the E39 and E39 suffer from this (not sure about the E46), but it could be the ABS/ASC module that sits in the engine compartment. They show up under diagnostics as a faulty wheel sensor but in actual fact, it is the module that is failing...

i checked and cleaned all the wheel sensors again , i did not use any solvents i did not want to mabe cause a problem , i used a soft cloth and cleaned them good, while i done this i had the battery disconected , i unplugged them and and checked all connections are dry and clean , the light is still on , i did notice the front left sensor looks as if it has been rubing against something , it has definate scrape marks along the one side , iam thinking that that could be a problem .
