So following up from this thread of mine , thought I should give an update.
https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=84124
Curiosity was killing me , I wanted to know if the replacement unit that I had purchased was a good working part so I left my original unit in the car , with all brake lines attached , disconnected the wiring from my unit and connected it to the new unit .
Turned the key, The three lights went on as normal , the ASC light stayed on Orange , the other light turned from RED to Orange , and the ABS light went off .
I scanned it for errors and all that came up was Vin mismatch or something of that sort .
I read that to code it to my VIN , I should follow the NCS EXPERT procedure and then I would need to calibrate the steering angle sensor and the other two lights should go off .
I used the procedure , from this page ,
http://www.bmwforums.info/3-series-...-recode-to-cure-code-5df5-internal-fault.html
And managed to get this done
Step 6: Back tot the laptop, this time NCS EXPERT. You are using this to code your VIN to the ECU. For me the steps went like this;
1. load expertmode
2. F1 VIN/ZCS/FA
3. F3 ZCS/FA
4. Select E46
5. Select ECU - Any of the available modules will provide NCS with your VIN.
6. F4 process ECU - Choose MK60 module
7. F3 Execute job
Im not sure what the above does ,
From there on my inpa wouldn't work , So I wasn't able to do the steering angle sensor coding part . But at least I know the unit works or well I know if its fitted at least my ABS would work .
I feel fairly competent enough to remove my unit and install this new ( Second hand ) unit to the car , remove and reattach the lines etc .
But im afraid of bleeding the brake system , I have never done this before and dont have the tools ( I think ) to do this . Im told that I have to bleed the system after installing this part .
Also , Im not sure how to do the steering angle calibration , My INPA gives me an error and on Step 7
4. Under "jobs" in the box on the left scroll down until you reach "lenkwinkel dsc abgleichen" double click on this and wait about 10 seconds for it to process.
My Tools 32 does not give me that option , Also , my car has ASC , but it only ever connects to it on the ASC option, but does if I chose DSC MK60 .
If I replace the part , and the brakes seem to work ok , would I be able to drive it to BMW and have a brake fluid change and get them to code it to my car ? Would they bleed the system when doing a brake fluid change? And would they be able to code the vin of my car to this unit ? I need to have an oil service done anyway.
Is this possible?
If the brakes are bad and unsafe , I would most probably just call the AA and have them tow the car to BMW if it is possible for them to code it . Would this be fine?
Would really appreciate your thoughts guys on how I should proceed .
Thanks so much for the advice in the previous post.
