Anyone running 225 tyres on 8.5 rim (18")

Got a set of E90 M sport 18" wheels and deciding what tyres to put on. The rims are 8J front and 8.5J rear. Standard tyre sizes are 225/40 and 255/35. I've just noticed that 8.5J is still within the allowable rim size for 225 tyres.

Anyone running 225 tyres on the E90 M sport rear wheel or any other 8.5J x 18" rim. Does the tyre look "stretched"?

I'm currently leaning towards putting on 225 on all 4 - any comments ... Also, any specials on decent tyres that you are aware of in this size :) I see TWT has Hankooks at R1200 which seem pretty decent.

i would suggest you use 255/35's on the back rims

if you do manage to get the 225's to fit on the back rims , the rims will protrude and more chances of it getting scratched and damaged

but i dont think 225's will fit on the 8.5J rims :dunno:

i currently have 245's on my back rims but i am going to get a set a 255/35's asap

Tiger wheel and tyre got conti sport contacts 3 for 1199. Thats in 225. The 245's are 1299. Maybe you should fit 245's at the rear. I think the price is really good. I remember seeing bridgestone's my01's for 1375 at autoquip. Good tyre too...

I GOT 235 ON MY 8,5 AND ITS PERFECT

I AM RUNNING 255/35 ON 18"X10" RIMS. IF YOU TAKE THE WIDTH OF YOUR RIM WHICH IS 10" YOUR TYRE WIDTH SHOULD NOT BE LESS THAN 10" IN OTHER WORDS 255MM. ANOTHER FACT IS YOUR TYRE WIDTH SHOULD NOT EXCEED YOUR RIM WIDTH BY MORE THAN ONE THIRD OF YOUR PROFILE(sidewall) HEIGHT IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN TYRE STABILITY(flexing). ANYTHING MORE THAN THAT WILL HAVE EXCESSIVE FLEXING ON YOUR TYRE'S SIDEWALL WHICH WILL LEAD TO TYRE FAILURE. THE SAME GOES FOR WHEN YOUR TYRE IS NARROWER THAN YOUR RIM WIDTH.

Why would you want to run such a skinny tire? Most are looking for the biggest tire they can fit.

That's the thing. I'm trying to figure out if it is skinny, as I've checked the specs on tyre sites and the 225/40/18 can be used up to a 9J rim. Standard 330i's also came with 225 in the rear, so I figured why not :dunno:

I prefer to have all 4 tyres the same so that I can rotate (yes, I know I would have to remove the tyres from the rims to do this). I hate having to shop for 2 tyres only and then get a different make for the back because of stock issues.

Back in the day, IIRC my E36 M3 coupe with 7.5J and 8.5J rims, but BMW specced the car with 235 all round.

I've got 235 hankook from twt on the rear 8.5 rim and it corners and feels perfect.

Rim sits nicely in the tyre aswell

Do the 225 in the front and a nice 265 on the rear, works well, thats the combo i have :thumb:

your rear tire size is determined by how much torque you have... so what works well for one car will not give you the right balance for another...

if you feel the front tires lock up to easy then i would go a few sizes smaller...

i think if you were to run the same width all around you would the rear will kick out a bit to easily...

it all depends on what you want... i dont think it would bother me and i would probably enjoy it, but if you want it to be neutral in a corner i would not go thinner than 235 on the rear...

you could always fit the 225s to the rear then if you dont like them take them off and keep them for next time you need front tires :)

just my 2c.:)

i have 255/35 18" on the rear & 225/40 18" on the front -e46 05-330d indv

when i sprayed my 18"s i put my spare set of 17"s with 225 all round

the ride was bad -it just did not feel right - never chanced any corners

maybe try another set with the 225's to see if you happy

like the guys said -the torque is a factor & what model -sportpack/exclusive -etc

I had a set of Falken ZE522's (225/40/18) on my ST and I was pretty happy with it. About R1150 per tyre from HI-Q Dastek in Pretoria.

I took some pics of it if anyone wants to see?
