Hey gents. I am currently in retail and have been for 11 years. Things are just too much for me now that i have a young family.

I have been looking for a career change as i have a bcom degree and i believe i can find something more decent to fit a better lifestyle.

So I have been in talks with discovery to become a Financial Advisor. Its a 2year course where they teach you all you need to know and after that pretty much leave you to be..

So any advise will be highly appreciated.

If you were running a business before, and you're going into this, then it shouldn't be too difficult. I worked directly with of the highest earning advisers(at a different company) for years, by being "their" adviser. In a nutshell, once you're into it, then either you will have to hunt for clients, which is very tedious, or if you contract to a big corporate, then they'll give you clients generated from leads. Once you have a large client base, it goes fairly easy, cause the company will take care of you, and give you a pa or staff to make it easier(depends on the company though). There's some rules and regulations that requires caution. Like reselling a contract to a client within a 5 yr period will have some, if not all, your commission clawed back. I can go on and on, but then I'll end up giving you a course ... lol. Long story short, if you run it like a business, then you'll succeed. And believe in what you sell. Also, take care of your clients. Don't be that guy that sells 10 yrs contracts, and want to cancel it in 5, so a new contract can be sold. Be the guy that looks at a client's tax bracket, and have proper investments done to cater for savings and financial freedom.

Sorry for the word vomit. I wish you all the best.

Mate of mine did this. All went well until he decided the line of work wasn't for him, and he resigned.

He was sued By Discovery for lapses that he couldn't control (I mean he resigned, and was no longer with the firm), and for traininh fees hale had to pay back.

Think it was like R400k total. Read the fine print before signing anything, because there isn't really an oppertunity to walk away "clean" once you in.

Yip....

I also went this route many years back.

Worked at Liberty for 11 months...

TWO years after leaving I receive an SMS stating that I owe aprox 40K on lapsed policies...

I mean like WTF....:rage::rage:

Why didnt Liberty admin take over my clients??? I found out from an inside contact that all my policy schedules was locked up in a strong room. Liberty didnt even bother contacting my clients to try to retain them....Very dissapointing....

Had to pay or else they threatened with legal action....

It happened to all my buddies that worked with me in that time period.

Just be careful and read the contract properly to avoid something like this

Once you in, you in it for the long haul!

There is a reason insurers make a killing, they indemnify themselves against any losses, you as the advisor ALWAYS remain responsible.
