Another E90 Battery Replacement Question. Why so many confusing answers?

Hi guys

So yesterday i went to our local mall and upon returning after about 4 hours the car didn't want to start. Did a voltage test and it showed 11v, anyway long story short got the car up and running.

Did a battery test this morning at my local battery centre and their machine indicated i need to replace my battery.

I still have the original battery which is almost 8 years old. 12v 80AH 640A is written on the battery.

BMW wants R2559 to replace? still looking at options

My question is, will this just be a straight swop? the guy i spoke to at BMW said yes. My model does not require a reset. The forum is 50/50 on this. so which one is it?

Thanks guys.

Been down this road

Depending on your year model of your car , it may or may not come with IBS(not the one u thinking off-lol)if it does, then your battery will have to be registered to the car.

If not-straight swop, obviously making sure that your alternator is 100% during thr battery load test.

My alternator failed after my new battery install. Battery light never went off.

Thanks, do we know which models have IBS? why is this such a grey area.

After starting the car the voltage showed 14+- volts, meaning alternator is charging?

Mine was a 2006 model and the battery required registering due to the alternator being used to working with lower voltage of the ageing battery and could not self rectify after the new battery was installed.

My advice is whether your car has IBS or not, it can't harm to get is registered anyway.:dunnoanymore:

The harm is felt when agents tell you R1400 or something to register.
Which is balls.

Mine also 2006.

Get it registered. Mine doesn't have IBS and the battery didn't last when it was not registered.

Registration cost is R500 and BMW battery is R1950.

@deanoblado, which are the confusing answers? where are there so many?

I only see 2 options, if car has IBS reset is a must, if not, its optional

What i meant was if you search on the topic even on this forum, there is not a clear cut answer like you put it above. How do you know if your car has IBS?

Anyway its sorted now, i just got back from BMW and they had to reset it. Replaced with the exact same battery that was removed. costed me R2098.
hoping for another 8 years before it dies.

Thanks guys for offering to assist with the reset.

Guys, IBS or not, the car needs to be told that the battery has been changed. As batteries age, the alternator changes the way it charges the battery in order to get the most life out of it.

I've referred Deon Rupnarain to someone in Durban. Not sure if the car has been checked out as yet though :hammerhead:

You learn something new everyday, here i thought the IBS was the intelligient part in the newer cars, seems our older cars also have some tech.
