ANNOUNCEMENT | animosity

[DISCLAIMER ]This is posted in my own, personal capacity and so please do not judge the rest of the staff of BMWFanatics for the views expressed herein.

I want to address the issues that have been present recently, concerning various topics and various threads, the biggest of which is the animosity I am seeing on the forum.

We are not all here to agree on a topic. We all have views, opinions and ideals that conflict with those of the people we interact with on the forum. While some may turn to personal attack and bigotry to display their disagreement, others may simply ignore and and hide and deal with the matters in their own silent way.

The latter is most applicable as to how issues arising on the forum may be dealt with, so that the forum is not riddled with keyboard wars and displeasing content (regardless of how many bask in the ambiance of the drama and turmoil). So when questioning why the staff, both moderators and administrators, handle situations the way they do and not all out in front of you as you may like, take a moment to think about the damage all the negative content displayed on the forum might do to potential new members. Some see it and think that this place is shit and so they won't come back a second time. You said it yourselves, "the members make up the forum". Well exactly. And will the forum exist further if no new members join because of the animosity? The forum is not here for you, yourself, a single person. It's here for everyone, free to join and take part as they wish. We cannot please each member and their personal expectations.

There are rules that I want to quote here which apply to some of the recent situations:

5. Any post or thread may be removed at a moderator’s discretion without informing the post / thread author of the reason.

We, the unpaid staff, do not have to explain to you, the members, exactly why we do what we do, when we do it, and how we do it, no matter how high profile a member you may be or consider yourself to be, regardless of your time registered as a member, your post count contribution as a member, or your services rendered to the forum.

We are not here for you as an individual, even though the staff often go out of their way to assist anyone as best they can. We are here for the forum/members as a whole.

8. Personal attacks, rudeness, flaming, baiting, insults to others, or arguments will not be tolerated. Challenge others’ points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully. Please refrain from making excessive negative comments. As the saying goes "If you have nothing nice to say then don't say it".

Self explanatory, I hope.

9. Any member who threatens anyone on the forum, via PM, instant messengers, or Email, will be banned immediately without notice. We reserve the right to remove offensive posts without notice. Our decision is final in these matters.

This ties in with what I said above with how posts/issues may be dealt with. Questioning the staff, and attempting to publicly pull them into the spotlight, will not aid you in your personal quest for answers. If you really need to understand because you cannot go on with your day without knowing what's going on behind the scenes, PM a staff member and see if they're willing to explain. Do not, however, expect the answers you seek.

10. Please do not question or discuss moderation or administrative decisions on the forum. If you have a query, then please PM a moderator.

You are breaking a rule in doing so, and you may just get banned for it. Some of you are lucky that you are still on this forum after the animosity you show to the staff sometimes.

12. If you break the forum rules in any way, or commit an act or omission which may be considered detrimental to the Forum in any way whatsoever, you may be dealt with accordingly in the sole and absolute discretion of the Site administrator. This can range from deregistration, suspension, or a ban and may range from a few days, weeks, months or may be of a permanent nature. Normally you will receive at least one warning before any action is taken. If you repeatedly break the same rule your account will be at risk of an extended (several months) suspension or even a permanent ban.

So far, every single rule quoted above has been broken lately, and yet here you are, demanding attention and screaming for "democracy". The forum is run in a mostly democratic way, but there's a limit. Call it dictatorship if you will, but we cannot allow TLGP threads to openly exist on the forum just because you ask for it [example]. It can do the forum a lot of damage. Who will you demand the democratic running of the forum from should the forum cease to exist?

12.1 The administrators of the site have full authority and discretion to exercise these rights and may exercise these rights with immediate effect if they deems it necessary and no notice will be required.

Sometimes we simply have to exercise this rule, whether you like it or not.

22. While these rules cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way.

Take note of this, it's a forum rule. The staff are here for a reason and do not appreciate being questioned on everything they do.

28. Any opinions or views expressed by Forum participants are their own. We do not endorse or support or otherwise give any credence or reason for reliance on any such statements or opinions. Views expressed or statements made on the Forum by members do not constitute those of BMWFanaticscoza (unless expressly so stated) and we do not take any responsibility for such views or statements.

Rules 28 applies when a moderator/administrator makes a post, expressing their views or opinions. Read it again. No matter how many times the staff are reminded that they need to exercise caution when posting as they represent the forum, they are human at the end of the day and so sometimes their views may be conflicting of yours. And sometimes members get into personal confrontations with staff for whatever reason. When this happens, there is outrage that "this is how the staff are treating us".

No... This is how that person is treating you. Personal.

33. You agree that you will not (i) use the Forum for any illegal purpose, (ii) place any material in the Forum that violates the copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, confidential information or other rights of any other party, (iii) place any material in the Forum that contains a false statement about any person, infringes upon the privacy rights of any other person, or threatens, harasses, abuses or embarrasses any other person, (iv) place any obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit or violent materials, graphics, photographs, text or otherwise in the Forum, (v) place any advertising, attempted business solicitation, marketing materials or sales promotional materials on the Forum (unless you are a Forum approved trader), or (vi) place materials in the Forum that are disruptive or off-topic.

Read 33(iii) again. Don't tell the staff, should you disagree with them, to come meet you face to face to sort out your differences. This is harassment and I will ban you permanently for it. You are not making yourself out to be bigger than you are.

This also goes against (what should be) your own personal security. If you have not met a forum member at one of the events we hold, you do not know who you might be inviting to come "tell something to your face". He may be a serial killer and he won't be coming to see you with a bunch of roses with the intention to apologise. You're making your own bed with this statement, and doing a bad job of it.

36. No form of illegal drag or street racing will be allowed to be advertised, organized, promoted or solicited on this Forum. We reserve the right to delete any post that breach this rule. We do not endorse or condone illegal street racing. BMWFanatics South Africa supports the "Arrive Alive Campaign". Forum members are free to post their "spirited driving" stories in the dedicated TLGP subforum at their own discretion. This Forum will be indemnified from and against any claims, damages, suits, threats, demands, liabilities, actions, causes of action, or injuries that may result there-from, including but not limited to any consequential, incidental and special damages of any nature.

A bit different from the context of this thread but it needs to be mentioned once more. Guys, no matter who you are, if you call out public illegal activities on this forum, you will be banned. Even in the TLGP section, you cannot post your intentions to organise illegal activities. You are bringing the forum into disrepute.

And the very last line of text displayed on the thread where all these rules are posted:

And lastly 'This is our house and you are a guest, subsequently we expect you to act respectfully'.

We are here for the love of the brand and to share in the content posted on this forum. Don't be a dick about it. We're all human.

I am an absolute noob here, but I am saddened to see that every now and then forum admins and mods have to haul out the big stick.

I have just retired from an eleven-year stint as mod and then admin on a forum. It is a thankless job and one that is not paid for.

Admins try and keep the peace and also fight for the good name of the forum and they are not recognised enough for what they do. :clapper:

Dyllan, are you saying that you are not paid as an admin?

Implying?
Simple question. I'm not asking because I don't know.

For the sake of transparency:

I am the leading administrator here - no salary.
I am the advertising coordinator/recruiter - commission only, no salary.
I am responsible for forum updates, security measures and handling the server (webmaster, in a way) - for this I invoice an hourly fee, and have probably only invoiced out about 10 hours over the last 2 years.

Do I get paid for recruiting mods, resetting passwords, cleaning up subforums, implementing new rules, and attempting to ensure the forum has a governing structure as an administrator? Definitely not. Would be the best job in the world, if I did.

I wouldn't have this hateful job in this hateful law firm if the forum could afford to pay for their admins.

I do it for the love of the forum, the brand and the people here (at least, most of the people here).

We "the unpaid staff"...

Although your efforts are appreciated, whether you believe it or not, you are under no obligation to be a mod. So using "unpaid" to reinforce your point is, well interesting.

I must agree thought, that, as a "community" we should respect one another, here in cyberspace, and out there in the real world. Unfortunately, as once again seen, is difficult to accomplish.

I don't like to have to state the forum staff are unpaid, however some people here think the staff are made to be here for them and to answer to them, and what would force them to be here if not a salary?

The staff positions are all voluntary. They dedicate their time here on their own accord and by their own accounts.

Thank you for the superfluous response, I was only asking about you not the admins as a collective. A yes/no answer would have sufficed.
