Thx, back on track. This car was advertised as a E34 Wagon. I actually replied to the owner telling him that he actually have a very nice E39 Touring on his hands.

So a question that has been bugging me: (As not to also veer off topic... :mmm: ): Best between the 540's: E34 or E39?

However the E34 has got a bit more of a "beastier" look to it in my opinion.

So it depends, if its your primary car, E39, if its your toy, E34, and as clutchy is quick to point out, with some mods, the power thing really relative.

I take it this touring is the pre facelift as it's got the amber lights front and rear. Can't really make out the shape of the spots, but it is also said to have rectangular ones for the pre facelift. I did ask the owner for some interior shots.

Then again for R95k you can get the later model E39 sedan 540 with the seriously spec'd interior...

LZ, I agree on the 'beastier look. The E39's rounded lines makes it look too 'soft' and 'elegant'. Not that it doesn't fill the market gap properly...

Also apparently the facelift E39 got 10 airbags. Anybody can confirm the actual differences?

As far as I'm concerned the pre has got the E34 interior and the facelift has the E46 interior..

The engine is also a 4.4L, not a 5.4L as mentioned in the ad. The engine design life is also not 500 000KM :spit:

Not sure about the price... 1999 540I Pre Facelift with 200 000KM (sea side car) on the clock for R95 000 :mmm:
There is a lot to be done on a V8 at that mileage (that is if its not been done already).

hmm, my E39 has 6 airbags .. My E34 has 1 ? lol.

but if in doubt, buy both :)

I bought the E34 simply because I love the E34 and I used to have an E34 535iM, and this time I wanted to have the ac-schnitzer kit like on Uber Soldats car.. I LOVE that look, I think its one of the HOTTEST looking kits on ANY car, period.

The E39 M5 kit is the same to me as the E34 ac-schnitzer kit. both uber fk'ing hot.. and when you start adding lipspoilers, rear diffuesers and front splitters to the E39 you get some real eye candy..

The car came standard with 6 airbags. The rear airbags which were in the door and the roof were an optional extra...
I think they became standard in 2002...

Hellas, I can believe that from an E34 or an E32...but I have a hard time believing that an E39 or E38 would get to 500 000KM without some sort of major engine rebuild.

The fact that they used plastic timing chain tensioners on these engine gives the engine a set life time as it is. Add onto that the all aluminium engine blocks and heads that overtime due to the high expansion rate will cause a headgasket failure...and you are looking at maybe 250 000KM - 280 000KM if the car has REALLY been looked after.
I have no doubt that after a rebuild, the same block and head would make 500 000KM easily however...
