Aircon regas on Old car

Not a bmw specific question but related to aircons in general. I have an old opel(92) model that needs an aircon regas. The one place that I went to said the new machine does not have the connecters for my car and wanted to charge like R2000 to convert it. I thought it sounded suspect and called auto aircon in endenvale they told me I pretty much need to change my condensor drier , compressor etc in order for my car to use the new gas. I assume there are still a lot of guys with older cars where the aircons still work. Is this conversion really necessary or is it simply a case of finding the right adapter/connector drain out the old gas and replace with new. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Took my '89 W124 Merc to MotoLek and they were able to help. The older gas is more expensive (approx. R600.) but no need to change the system.

Thanks for the reply guys. I spoke to a few mobile guys that said they simply remove the old gas and have connectors to fit older cars and replace with new gas. Works fine without replacing components.

The new gas does not work as well as the old gas ( I have experienced it , its not as cold) and I have heard is not that compatible with the old components . So in the long term it might damage parts , leak easier etc . This was also told to me by most scrap yard guys , repair shops and a Dealer . I went ahead and did it and they were correct , its not as cold . I dont know why.

Im still not sure what to do about the Aircon in my E30 , in order to fix it I might have to replace everything with new components . Cant get the old gas anywhere in Durban :(
