Airbag query

Hey guys

The leather on my steering wheel is busted. I can get a 2nd hand steering wheel for around R 450,00 without the airbag.

What is the procedure to re-install the airbag? Is it worthwhile, or should I rather pay around R 800,00 to have the leather replaced by an auto trimmer shop?

get the new wheel, the Airbag can just be swapped over if the new wheel uses the same shape one.

The new steering wheel is identical to the old one. My concern was just about the airbag. Is it a straight swop, or is it one of those costly affairs you hear about so often.

Hiya Jandre,

I did mine this weekend. Easy as pie... just remember to disconnect the battery 1st and let the system discharge for about 5 minutes. :thumbsup:

Straight swap, simple matter of disconnecting the battery, wait a few minutes, then pop the airbag out the center of the wheel, if its like the e46 airbag, there are 2 holes just behind the wheel that you stick a screwdriver into to release the airbag clips.

Unplug the airbag, take the main nut of the steering wheel, put the new wheel on, and plug and clip the airbag back into place

wish was as easy fr me wanted to retro fit a e46 multifunction motorsport steering wheel i have the old e36 type steering wheel i have the diy to wire up all the buttons and i can get the wheel for 650 BUT in my case need a dif airbag and they hard and expensiv to come by so scrapped that idea lol but yh easy swop for you if its the same steering wheel

Got the new steering wheel yesterday. Thx Motorem, a.k.a, The price is right.

Found the right tool to remove the Airbag locating screws, so this weekend it's ready to go,
