Air filter options

Hey there guys,

Once again I call upon the expertise of my fellow fanatics.

I have to change my current air filter (E87 120D) as it is in a total horrid state. I would like to know whether or not a k&n filter will make a difference in performance. Or should I just go with the standard filter from BMW?

The price for the k&n is R870 as opposed to the R550 I would pay at the stealers.

Any feedback/advice/experiences are welcome :ty:

Agreed

I quote from one of our most knowledgeable members

Whatever you do please do not put a cone filter on the car or a K&N filter as there is nothing to be gained other than worn bores and extra noise.

Thank Guys,

Order has been placed at Auto Atlantic

Should I remove the Filter sock? Somehow I have the feeling it restricts the breathing a bit?:fencelook:

I would not suggest it as it does have a filtering function

Take a look at the old one when it comes out, then you will see how much nasties it has prevented from entering the motor

Another question...

Are there any benefits to fitting:

1: A bigger Turbo (if so, which turbo)
2: an external DV

I cant really advise on that, but probably alot of work and money to make work properly. If you're after more power rather look at software (remap or PnP)

Software, DP and Exhaust are already on the cards, seeing that 320D (charged-wp) eat up the road on the cape town breakfast run made me wanna make my car go faster and run harder with the type of reliability of that 320d touring...

Thus my quest for knowledge in anything that will make more power without sacrificing reliability

Software DP and Exhaust are a good start. Think about maybe a bigger intercooler if you're going for fairly aggressive software

I have had K&N replacement filters not cone filters. On both my 320ds. And while there aren't really any gains to be had, it does allow more air into the engine if I recall Chris test correctly.

The main and probably only benefit is that it will save you money in the long run.

DP and software are first.

Then intercooler.

Then exhaust.

Upgrading turbo... you're best bet will be a hybrid turbo. But in all honesty its going to be very expensive and probably not worth it. You will be satisfied with DP and SW alone.
