Aftermarket DVD issues

Fitted a DVD double din aftermarket unit to my e46. Issue is with the steering controls. Initially worked, then became intermittent, the dead. So, I sent the Can-Bus Decoder (Little box that acts as a translator between steering and unit) back and got a new one. Fitted it, did not work. Refitted it and it worked for a bit and then dead. Now nothing, not even intermittent. Any suggestions? Don't want to send the unit back to China! Or does anyone know of a place in Cape Town that are really good with car electronics?

Maybe Combined Electronics in Platterkloof - he does all the tricky electronic and ECU jobs for BMW. Problem is, he is known to be expensive in general. But he did sort out an annoying and weird problem with my father in law's Z4 some years back...
