Advice - urgent

Hi everyone, I need advice so I will try and explain in simple terms :

* Bought a 2006 E90 320D August 2014.
* Had to remind the salesperson after I took ownership of the car that it wasnt serviced in over a year.
* Service was done : September 2014.
* Advised of noise in engine bay : September 2014.
* Car taken to various workshops , but problem could not be detected. September 2014 - February 2015.
* Contacted dealer in April 2015 and advised the problem still not resolved.
* Identified crank pulley needed replacing : May 2015.
* Crank Pully replaced with after market 'non genuine' part : June 2015.
* Alternator had to be replaced : July 2015.
* Car idle is louder with new crank pulley and makes a horrible screaching noise with aircon on that was never there before.

What can I do? I feel I was caught good and solid with this car. I'm thinking ombudsman purely for the crank pulleyt situation. :cry:

ombudsman FTW.

These dealers will give you the run around until you get bored and fix it yourself.

That scream on the aircon, take a spray bottle and spray water over the aircon pulley and see if the noise goes away, might be alignment that is causing that.

The loud noise, that is probably your turbo on it's way out. My friend had also the loud noise for like a month and then the turbo gave up on him. Loud noise came all of a sudden, sounded like a turbine engine when reving.

it could be that the strain on one of idler/tensioners is causing it to fail

my answer posted on the other thread below....worth a try

please help there is this noise from my car where its warm, I was told it was a belt and pulleys @ bmw they tried fixing it but the noise is still there. does anyone know where I can fix it other than @ bmw.... bmw 320 d e90 2010 model.

There is a long history of the belt tensioner pulleys taking strain with the age of the vehicle, many times it is just the tensioner playing up all on its own, at other times it is due to a related component starting to pack up, ie the alternator, or the aircon unit, or the steering pump, this causes extra strain on the entire system, and often the extra load on the tensioner bearings, causes these to show the signs first

quick fix, would be to get a bottle of Q20, with the long straw adaptor, and spray, whilst the engine is running, a very accurate direct shot at one tensioner pulley after the other.

the noise will suddenly get quiet, and then you will know which one it is, and you will also know which other components are within that particular belt circuit.

the Q20 will give you a few days worth of silence, before it will start again, giving you more time to find the fault, and spares.

It is actually a reasonably easy DIY job for someone with a few spanners

Hi Ralf, I am an illiterate when it comes to mechanics. Do I spray the Q20 on the face of the pulley ?? definitely not where the belt runs though right ?
Please advise.

not onto the belt iteslf, as this could cause the belt to slip, but rather onto the centre portion of the rotating bearing, as far as it is possible

you will get some spray going over onto the belt, but it shoudn't be to much of a problem, if a bit goes onto the belt, you really want to try to get the lubrication of the Q20 to enter the bearings on which the pulley is fitted or the bearing on which the tensioner is fitted

agreed, way too many people go down the expensive road of replacing power steering pumps, and aircon units, and alternators, and crank pulleys, only to still have the noise afterwards, and all along it was a small relatively inexpensive, and easy DIY tensioner, that needed replacing.
an easy fault analysis with the q20 or water spray, could have saved many rands of unncesarry component replacements

No sir, I bought the vehicle from another dealer , not a BMW one.
My thoughts were that seeing they were going to replace the pulley that they'd fit a genuine part. I only managed to stumble onto this when other work was done on the vehicle. The guy reckoned there are new belts for sure, but the crank pulley is k#k. :RedNo:

That's a pity. Well the issue is your crank pulley, You have to change it to the original oem bmw one. Once you do this, your issues will be gone. Good Luck Mate!
