Advice on potential (E63/64) M6 purchase

Good day Fellow Fanatics

I'm posting this thread under the ///M Fanatics Forum as I think it would be best suited here? If not, please feel to move it to the correct forum :grin:

It would be a great help to me if the M6 owners and other fanatics with knowledge on the M6 could give me some advice on these beasts!

The car(s) in question:

2007 E63 M6, grey, with 68000km on the clock, stock

2006 E64 M6, black, with 38000 km on the clock, stock

They're both within their respective trade & retail price ranges.

I will be going to see the grey M6 over the weekend and would like to know what problems I could possibly look for?
I've heard a lot of bad things about failure of the SMG gearbox in the M3 but was it improved for the M5/6?
What are the possible problem areas with these cars? Being an ///M car I know if something breaks, the bills will pile so i'd like to be ready for it (possibly LOL).

Different box. Apparently a bit of a pain to drive but failure is imminent on these boxes and expect a nice quote for R80 000.00 to fix....

HOWEVER there are some jewels out there. Maybe enquire more on the car, the driving style of the current owner, and maybe have someone read the codes and have someone do a search for any replacements of gearbox and engine components.

Otherwise its a pure joy to own and drive.

Get the 06 model... A year doesn't matter, but you save a heap on mileage, plus black > grey IMHO.

With regards to what to look out for... Google is your friend. The M5/M6 discussion has been exhausted on this forum, just run a quick search.

Thanks for the input!! They're both dealer cars so I'm thinking they wont know much about prev owners & their driving styles? I will ask if the gearbox has had work done. FSH is available for both. On the grey they're offering extended mechanical warranty. The only thing putting me off the black is its a convertible - maybe if i see it it'll change my mind :roflol:

Easy choice. Forget the convertible. Anyone who gets a convertible ///M obviously has no idea what an ///M car is for, and is only in it for the pose factor.

I have an 06 model now for just over a year and have had no issues at all.mileage is 57600kms

Have been considering one myself although the M5 boards are quite morbid on bearings, diff and gearbox.

I own an S54 and I already sometimes wake up with a cold sweat, but that S85 V10 is such an awesome machine and the M6 looks stunning.

Maybe one day...

Still tentative at the moment guys. Doing some homework on the cars before I make a decision.

Got in touch with Tune Tech, most helpful ppl I've come across. They've given me rough quotes of things that should be done to maintain the beast. If you're in the market for a V10 M5/M6, definitely consult them.
The figures are high but not as high as I was imagining LOL.

Of most concern is main bearings which from what I've read could go at any time (not knowing the previous owners driving style).
Other than that gearbox must be serviced to keep it from getting sick.

So still thinking about it for the moment.

There are a few Manual examples prowling our streets, so that just leaves bearings as a worry

That being said, I think a V10 is a fantastic addition to any M lovers garage. As long as you are aware of the potential issues and have included such costs in you play budget.

I am aware of potential issues, Phoenix did advise me and also contacted Tune Tech to get some figures & further advice.

I have not driven a M6 yet, my In laws had a 650i and that was an epic car, plenty quick and great on the long roads.
