Advice on an SUV for dad-in-law

Is you in law getting some financial advice regarding retirement to project cash flow, expenses etc? If not please ask him to sort that out before considering any purchase near retirement. Not derailing but please sort that out first. Also as a general rule for retirerees, whatever that plan to spend must be halved so R370k should be a R180k if can be afforded. It's scary how many people outlive their retirement savings in real terms.

Yep, he's considering his options and I'll make sure he knows what he'll receiving in retirement and check if he can afford it. I'm a lot more prudent and agree that he should finance as low an amount as possible, definitely not more than 150k.

So with a deposit of 120k, should look at a vehicle at around 270k, which is 100k south of the Creta.

Also, read a review recently on the Creta and it mentioned that it doesn't come with stability and traction control. That's a concern so going you investigate further

demo ix35 2.0CRDI - I can personally vouch for this car and its capabilities.\\I have the 2WD and it comes standard with the hill descent and ascend control, 130kw/192nm powered engine. averag e7.9l/km in town and 5.9l/100km on the open road and uses a 52 litre tank. best so far, 1125km of a tank open road, in-town best was 856km.

Car is manual though as it is the 2WD, only get the 4WD in auto (6 speed), comes with everything you would need, my 61 year old Dad drives it ad really likes it because of the comfort, economy and the power is phenomenal!

its a relatively light car and it packs a good punch, i ran it to some nifty top speeds with ease...pano roof, flip in mirrors, well distributed climatranic aircon unit, beautiful sized boot...and comfy seats. for R370k, he can pick up a very low mileage one now, i got mine brand new at 370k cause the Tuscon just launched...maybe find a brand new one even still thats hidden somewhere.

Thanks for that Ash, much appreciated. Will mention it to him. He's quite fond of Hyundai. Those figures are very impressive. Quite a bargain at that price too.

Also look at the pre-owned Prado? Comfy and Toyota reliability. Not sure if looking for new cars only...

Haha Funny Guy! I just sold my old 2011 Prado with 170000km for more than the budget, I'm getting the new facelift coming now in sep or Oct and that's R900k
The kind of money OP is talking will get you a previous Generation Prado

Op I was in the same boat as you recently, we looked at the CX3 which is viable option, RAV4 top of the range is about R515k, but lower Spec Demo you might get in your price range. We landed up settling for a Tiguan 2.0Diesel DSG R-Line, around R565k, not sure pricing on the lower Spec

Good Luck

1125km/100 *5.9 = 66.375 litres of fuel....:dunnoanymore:

+1 for ix35.

Also would suggest selling the Focus privately - you could make another R10k easily/R20k if willing to wait it out a bit which would help significantly considering the circumstances.

Ended up getting a demo 2017 Xtrail 2.5se with mileage of 27000km. Vehicle was actually used by Damon Beard from ECR. Full house with almost all options included (reverse camera, SatNav, pdc, 7 seater). Price was R350k Erich they dropped from R370k.

Warrantee is balance of 6 years and 150'000km.
Dad is happy. They offered R140k for the Ford and together with a R40k deposit, he will only finance R170k, which he can comfortably afford.

Was quite impressed by the Xtrail when I test drove it. It's power output didn't really impress me though but I guess that's due to me being biased through my m135i. However it pulled decently. Ride quality really good though and interior very comfortable.
Will post some pics soon.

The car says 52 litre without reserve, 58 litres maximum i ever filled in the car. Thats my OBD read outs, the OBD on this car is kak. At full top up, til the you cannot fill anymore it will give a range of 670km the most but you will get 800km out of it. At current, the car is showing 9.0l/km because of my bad driving 2 days ago and i have 740km done and got another 120km to go on the OBD. But when it his 50km, reserve light will come on.

Korean maths, sorry :fencelook::fencelook:

I notice that manufacturers fiddle with the OBC to their advantage. Technically even fuelly is unreliable if you use the km covered by the OBC.

Average of 7.9l in town is very light. I used to get around that level i had a Golf 2.0tdi. To achieve that for an SUV is amazing.

it is quite light in the weight department also, it is impressive and i drive kak...all i do is listen to the gear shift changer and change just before 2000rpm majority of the time and the car does well...

Now to add to the shitty OBD read out, jumped into the car this afternoon, OBD reads 201km to go...after being on 120k in the morning....however so far...i now have done 740km of in-town driving only. on this tank, was still under half tank and got over 400 out of it.

I never liked the IX35 ever, i now eat a lot of pie...humble pie! lol
