Advice on an SUV for dad-in-law

Hi fanatics

This is not necessarily a BMW-related post but needed advice for a new vehicle that my dad-in-law is looking at b purchasing.

Bit of background on dad-in-law: he's retiring next year and wants to get a small to medium suv to use for lots of travelling and road trips. He is looking at a vehicle that:
- is up to R370k
- offers great overall value, regarding features included but also which is reliable and safe
- is powerful enough for road trips (at most involving around 4 people with luggage)

He currently owns a Ford Focus 2.0 that is fully paid off.
He's looking at the recently launched Hyundai Creta 1.6tdi
as it seems to satisfy all of the above (goes for R370k). Hyundai offering R110k as trade in value for the Ford whilst Nissan offered R140k. Will need to get as much as we can here to minimize the finance.

What do you think? Are there other vehicles that should be considered that are as good or even better value?

Also look at the pre-owned Prado? Comfy and Toyota reliability. Not sure if looking for new cars only...

Sorry, cars should preferably be new, otherwise demo. He's owned just 1 new car his whole life (the Focus), so wants to keep it new as far as he can.

Be weary of Volvo. Great car, but not very service/resale friendly in South Africa.

Service friendly? Volvo dealership are on par with the best.

Resale, yes. Not the best but again, on par with most brands but for this very reason they are excellent pre-owned buys.

And because OP is looking for a car for long trips etc the Volvo as got probably the most comfy seats in the bussiness.

Resale, yes. Not the best but again, on par with most brands but for this very reason they are excellent pre-owned buys.

When trying to sell a Volvo, one will struggle more than with Jap/Korean/German cars. People in SA are not keen on second hand ones.

And because OP is looking for a car for long trips etc the Volvo as got probably the most comfy seats in the bussiness.

Like i said, as a car, a Volvo is very good. Would give my soul for the new XC90. Its just not a very SA market friendly make.

Thx for responses so far guys. It's really heartening an helpful to see. I'd normally conduct my own research but since joining this forum, I've found that the collective experiences here on cars is something you can't get though independent research.

Also my dad in law is of a below average financial position and worked hard to pay his current vehicle off, so want him to get into a vehicle that is really good and not get ripped off. If he can't afford it will have to keep saving.

He likes the Creta as he said it comes quite fully stocked with leather seats, reverse camera, folding mirrors, is automatic and has decent powet torque (90kw, 260nm).

But I told him I'll check if there are others in the market to look at. Cx3 looks like an option but not that many features compared to Creta and it's also not as big.

Rav4 Is as option as some mentioned. Xtrail would've been ideal but it's manual.

Look forward to more responses coming.

Normal services and other parts we replaced on our Volvo which we have from new till now (210kkm)(V70 2.0t) is on oar or sometimes cheaper than my brothers I20 so yeah no, not really more expensive.

But in any case...

You cant beat the Koreans for specifications.

Hyundai / Kia will load their cars with features that others offer as optional extras.

And their build quality is on par with the rest these days.

Creta is good.. look at nissan qashqai if they're offering good trade for focus..
Great options and also a 1.5t diesel engine.. drive one recently and was awesome.. i was impressed.

Best car i have owned so far is probably my wifes Mazda cx3. 2l na 110kw 5.9l per 100km .. sat nav rear pdc.. plenty go not very big though but we like it as the cx5 and others are too big for wife..

But great car and great service from Mazda. Car was ready after a service in about 1.5hrs..

No issues with the car... very happy..

Personally i would not recommend someone having to pay off a vehicle while in retirement. It seems strange to want to pay R5500 odd per month while in retirement when in most cases the pension payout is a percentage of your salary.

I wish there was another option, but other than extending the retirement date or reducing the amount he is looking to spend I cant help much.

I agree Sash, but he does plan on working for 6 months further to retirement to help fund the vehicle. A new vehicle is important as it would mean being covered for another 7 years (warrantee period for Hyundai) and being able to do more than with the Focus.

If the vehicle can be purchased for around 320k then I think it makes sense. Then he just needs to finance 180k approx, half of which can be done from the extra period of work post retirement.

If road tripping is his thing then look At Toyota rav/Fortuner as if he ever needs parts or help they ar all over Africa. You should be able to get a2014/15 lowish mileage AWD drive Rav in that range.

I doubt R370k will get you one in warranty.
