Hi Guys

Im in the process of buying a 2005 120D HATCH Sport with 75000km on the clock. Car is in excellent condition but is out of Motorplan and warranty.
Purchasing from BMW Zambesi Auto - full check and service has been done by BMW before i purchase. I have the option of buying a 2 Year unlimited mileage Extended warranty that BMW arranged for R6000 from SA Warranties (Bumper to Bumper cover)

Please advise if this is necessary to purchase to cover myself for unforseen problems on the car or just peace of mind.

Has anyone experienced any issues on the 120D

Big things will always be a turbo or injector failure. Just read the fine print. Motorite has cover on something like a turbo only up to R4k which is useless since a replacement at the dealers would be R30k. If the plan is honoured by BMW self, it should be good.

Hey man, who is your sales guy at Zambesi?
120d is reliable from what i hear, best if you purchase the cover. BMW's can be expensive to maintain out of motorplan. you would be well advised to get the warranty, also make sure ou check the limits on th warranty.

For example, there will be thresholds on the cover, for example - R65k on engine, 25k on transmission, 4k on fuel supply and so on.

Just be mindful of that! read it properly and compare to other warranties offered by McCarthy for example.

Hi

Sales lady is Joanne.

This warranty only offers R27500 on Engine and R7500 on Turbo Assembly amongst other parts covered.

Any other good warranties i can look at? links will help.

Thanks Guys.

Turbo is R12600 plus VAT for the turbo unit ONLY... Do the math. But you are on 75000km. That's nothing. Save the R6k.

I personally have had no issues with SA Warranties, but the values that they would cover you would be too low to assist.

I have see that Motorite offers a warranty thats a little better. you would get engine coverage up to R40k and Turbo coverage up to R11k. It costs something like R8500.

there are other options, like SA Warranties, MC Sure(Mccarty Warranty), AutoSure (only offered for vehicles being bought from a dealership), Warranty Solutions.

You could also check with your insurance. I know that some insurance companies offer a mechanical warranty that can be added to the cover for an additional fee.

Also, would BMW not be able to extend their own factory Warranty, seeing as the vehicle is being bought from a BMW dealership.

ask them first if anything needs to be covered by the warranty, will it be honored and done by BMW themselves? I know when i took mine out i had to claim using private mechs, and depending on the kms of the vehicle, they pay only a portion of the cover.
get the warranty it will save you in the long run.

Can't comment on the motorplan issue... But I have a 2005 120D. Great car, has good economy when driven conservatively and fair power when driven hard. It comes alive... No major issues, although my turbo recently sarted making more noise than usual. Just hit 102 000 Kms... Good buy.

Will BMW not extend their own Motorplan by time (car only has 75 000 kms.)?

Go and register as an owner at bmw.co.za, then apply online for motorplan extention, I saved about R1000 that way when I extended my motorplan.

Hi Guys

The previous owner was a lady and did not extend the motorplan, it expired end 2009.
I have spoke to BMW abt this originally and they said that because she didnt extend before original 5year plan expired this will be very expensive and will charge me 40k to extend by 1 year - I laughed at them an said no thanks.

I have researched the 120d and apparently thers not much to service as the Cambelt is a chain and lasts a lifetime of the car.
The only items to change is the oil and filters.

I am more concerned abt the Warranty, im currently driving a 2004 Audi A4 1.9TDI bought @ 70 000 km - i did take the Motorite extended warranty for 7K, currently on 136 000km and never had the use for the warranty.

The BWM is Steptronic - how reliable and are they problematic?
Also a sunroof, light package, auto lights and rain sensors, folding heated mirrors etc - worried abt the electronics -are they problematic?

Thanks

Steptronics are a dream, especially in JHB traffic. and because you dont have to keep depressing a clutch pedal and changing between 1st and 2nd, theres a lot less wear and tear.

Sunroof can get stuck if not used properly. Electronics in these cars are normally reliable and dont give hassles, and if they do, there are plenty of BMW specialists out there that can help reset the error indicator and do the repair.

I have to concur.

the Steptronic gearboxes are lekker. much better than the automatic gearboxes on the Mercs. great for traffic, theyre quite reliable and if put into sport mode the changes are quite nice and quick.

as for the sunroof. make sure you use it a few times. that way none of the moving parts will become seized or tight. just an open and a close in the morning will do just fine.

The Steptronic gearboxes are lekker when they are working. They cost an arm and a leg to get fixed when something goes wrong.

Mate, sorry about the previous owner not extending the motorplan. She did a number on you, literally. The best motorplan is the bmw one and since you cant get that one anymore, you need to shop around for a bit to see who will provide the most cover for the buck you'll pay in. Dont risk it driving around without the piece of mind. You dont want your injectors and turbo to fail on you without it. Unless you are loaded of course.
