Hello everyone,

I have moved up from Cape Town to Gauteng - and have noticed that my car is extremely heavy on petrol . Should i take the vehicle in to BMW to alter settings for the altitude differance or does the vehicle do it automatically?

Please advise.

Thanks

There is nothing for the dealer to adjust for the altitude change, the car's ECU takes care of it all.

What is "extremely heavy on petrol" ? Please quote a consumption figure for us to compare. Maybe you are just driving like you used to in CT, forgetting about the 17% power loss we have to live with here and putting foot all the time.

I am getting 7.2 km/l (13.75l/100km)

Is that normal?:fencelook:

Basically 400km - 450km on a tank

That is a bit on the heavy side yes. Ask Sankekur what type of consumption he gets up there.

Depends on your driving style. Highway/city? Putting foot or driving miss daisy?

That sounds realistic driving in heavy traffic up here in JHB ...

On the open road it should go to around 7-8 l/100km in JHB.

Thanks

My wife drives the car 99% of the time - and she has started moaning like crazy about it. She drives just around Pretoria with it - so normal stop start (robot to robot)

Have swopped from today - I drive from PTA to Jozie - so will see what i get this week.

Thanks for the feed back.

The window mechanism on the drivers side rear has also stopped working. Can anyone tell me where i can get a new one installed? and what is the expected cost?

sounds like a fair figure, how long have you been in JHB for, does take a little while for the ecu to adapt to new atmospheric conditions so might get better in time...

otherwise you can always put an aftermarket chip on!!!

+1

.... and consider a decat. If your cats are clogged up, this will make a huge difference. BTW, what is your mileage?

Currently I get around 10l/100km, this is about 35/65 split highway and urban driving, also not a lot of traffic since I drive north in the mornings and south in the afternoon (this is in PTA)
When I was still at my previous job I drove only robot to robot and I got 12l/100km.

Some other things to look at is when was the car serviced last, when was the air filter changed and when were the plugs changed.

Edit: Also auto or manual gearbox?

The car has 152 000km and has another 8000km till next service.

Its a automatic.

When i book it for its next service i will make sure that they clean the cats.

Thanks for the assistance. :ty:

PS - Anyone know where i can have the window mechanism replaced?

@ Cole - the BM has been up here for 3 months.

for the urban driving here it sounds normal. 7 to 8l/100km on highway.
buy the mechanism from BMW or try Bemows in PTA and change it yourself.

they should cost about R2000. ask for a 10 or 20% discount.

You'd have to go to an exhaust place to get the cat's (catalytic convertors) removed. They are located within the exhausts and OEM headers. I don't think you can "clean" them.

You can contact IPC for the window mechanism. Their number is 0118406960. You will have to fit it yourself or send it in. With regards to the consumption that does sound a bit heavy but in line if the car is driven in traffic all the time. Expect around the high 10's or low 11's combined cycle
