Advice: E90 320d to Mod or F30 320d/330d

Hi Guys

So my 2011 E90 320d M sport Auto is paid up and just turned 105000km recently
And although I don’t have the itch as yet I am contemplating ideas.
I really am enjoying the car as is..

Car is bone stock , and I know there is a lot I can do , performance wise I could decat/downpipe, software etc. and aesthetically lips and spoilers …
But I am two minded and unsure whether to do above or save that money and trade in for an F30 320d or save longer and go F30 330d?
I really love that 8 speed auto and the look of the M sport…
But there are trade offs , my E90 is rextremely well looked after and has relatively low mileage. I could easily trade in for an F30 that's a dog

What would be a wise decision?

They very nice in stock form yes, but once you mod them they turn into something else.

Just not sure how far we can push them with the auto gearbox.
Apparently the limit is 420nm. So you have to take that in consideration as well

I'm in the same boat. My 2011 320d is bone stock and is in awesome condition, only 69000kms. The way i see it - is i would rather buy a fast car and leave it stock as opposed to trying to make a slow(ish) car fast...

I would save up for a F30 330d.

With the G20 3-series arriving in the not too distant future our E90s are going to decrease in value once more, so the F30 should hold better value.

The F30 is also not a country mile ahead of the E90 in general, but I do feel the gearbox is miles and miles ahead of the 6-speed ZF box. The same goes for the 330d as you just can't beat the grunt and smoothness of the 6-cylinder diesel.

A tuned 320d also can't really match a stock 330d anyway, so if you're basing your decision solely on performance the 330d gets another nod.

Keep the E90, save longer and get the 330d you won't be disappointed

Keep both cars, spend the money on Modding the Z4

Lol the Z4 is one car I just want to keep in its purest form, the only thing I might do is decat and exhaust but Im actually waiting for a good reason to that. oh and the Sport M front bumper, but that's a pipe dream as they are hens teeth,,,

Haha I already did just that with the Z4 coupe, i really don't feel the 320d to be slow at all tbh , coming from my 120i the 320d feels twice as fast and all that torque makes it feel really meaty

agree the 320d ain't that slow. had a run against a g6 gti. that guy was just as impressed as I was. I have sw only and he has intake, exhaust and sw.

Yip thought about this , and the timing has to be just right ...
will see just how much the E90 drops , I've only ever kept cars for 3 years max, but if forced I really don't mine keeping the 320d for a few years longer..

My 2c

If you have a reliable car, that's fuel efficient and not costing you an arm and leg, - keep it!!!

The best car to own is one that's paid off. If you absolutely positively have to by an new car, save as much as you can now and buy cash in the future.

In that case, definitely map it.
For a mere 5 grand, you will completely transform your car.
From amazing in gear acceleration, that proves really helpful these days and with any long trip, to better fuel consumption i cant stress enough to get a 320D mapped. You said the torque feels "meaty" to you.... imagine with 80nm more... it will put a smile on your face every time. And where there was non existent power after 3200rpm, the smooth power will keep going.

And all this is a still superb chassis, and still good looking car. Thats all paid off. It's no brainer.

Enjoy it until the time comes where you want to upgrade, and there isnt a single a doubt. you will know when its the time.

Enjoy the happy miles :chef:
