A strange 'service center' request.

Hey guys,

I am in a little predicament due to a mistake on my part.

This is going to sound dodgy and I am very doubtful I will find someone willing to help... either way, here it goes.

When I bought my car in Jan 2016, I bought an extended warranty. Come April 2016 with the first oil service due at 80 000 km, I decided to do it myself. Not to save money, but to make sure it is done properly and I wanted to learn how to work on the car. Bought all service parts from BMW and went ahead and completed the service. Easy.

Fast forward to today, I am trying to sell the car.

My first mistake was that the book is not stamped, no stress since I still have the invoices from BMW of the service items I bought to explain/provce to potential buyers that the service was done by me.

Second mistake... To claim/transfer from the **** expensive warranty I bought, they want an invoice from an RMI approved service center of the 80k service done.

Now onto my query.... Is there anyone who knows of anyone who would be able to assist in getting my service book up to date and stamping for 04/2016 and printing me an invoice for that date or todays date with a note stating it was done in 2016?

Please pm if you have a possible solution to my problem...

I know how this looks, if I cant find someone willing to help I will call it a day and write of the warranty.

Ouch, tough one bud.

You basically asking someone to commit fraud here. There will be guys that will do this for a fee, just not sure if you will find any here.

Yeah no you voided the warranty by doing the work yourself.

This is why aftermarket warranties are worth less than the paper they're written on in most cases.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one.

Somewhat on this topic, the RMI accredited workshop clause in these warranties is such a stupid thing in many respects. On one hand, RMI is a toothless entity from an enforcement perspective according to some who have had to pursue matters through them (not me directly) and on the other I know of non RMI places that are AWESOME and many many (if not most) RMI accredited places that I wouldn't take a 1400 bakkie to.

Just to build on your initial reason for doing it yourself.

My car has 333 000km on it. I took the car to have the Oil Service done (Note the computer didn't say it was time but I decided as its a high mileage vehicle that I would do an oil service every 7 500km).

I get a call later to collect the car from the dealer stating that they are not going to do a service as its not necessary according to the computer and then proceeded to charge R500 for a diagnostics check.

So I can understand where your are coming from doing it yourself but unfortunately you cant have a full service history without that stamp and they know it.

For those interested,

I got my book sorted from a service center in the family, but did not get a invoice as I don't want to put anyone in a position where they would need to commit fraud... I gave this a long hard thought and decided its not worth it.

I however have a plan. Reading all the documentation regarding the warranty, since I have never claimed I can cancel it and receive pro rata back for the remaining year. :D Im exploring that option as we speak.

edit: 'service center in family' should read: a friend of a family member does services on cars and stamp the books afterwards, as proof that a service was done. Non RMI service center.

what If you have it serviced right now by an RMI service centre or BMW (John At Leo has a special for R960) would that not than be recorded as the last service for the warranty to be transferred.
That way you not committing anyone to a fraudulent stamp and you getting some clean oil for the car.

The issue is having a record to show a service was done by an RMI approved shop in the past. Servicing the car now, doesn't change the past.

I agree with this ......
and if I was buying your car, then I would rather have you do an affidavit than having an RMI stamp on the services book to complete the FSH.

So they stamped your book for a service they did not do?

Hi Buddy,

Had a similar issue, to cut a long story short. As requirement for the "policy" to pay out for a certain part, the last service has to be by a RMI accredited workshop. So as my car was serviced I was forced to do a just an Oil change via the dealer in order to get my book stamped / processed part replaced and viola. I think to save you lots of unnecessary headaches do a quick "oil change" at an accredited RMI dealer and get it over with. Its obviously written somewhere in the fine print pointless fighting it unless your aim is to have it voided of course

This is exactly what he didn't do.

All the interested parties know exactly what the current case is. I am not hiding anything from anyone.

The stamp is just to show a service was done, not to claim full 'RMI' service history. I can't get the warranty back, unless I am willing to get t a fraudulent invoice. Again, all interested parties are aware of this. Eitherway, the car does have a full service history. All services are done and I have proof of the latest ones. RMI/Non RMI doesn't matter. I have photos and invoices to prove what was done to the car in that specific service. No stress. I see no fault or lies/fraud here. :) I am not deceiving anyone, everything is done transparent and above board.

PS. 'service center in family' should read: a friend of a family member does services on cars and stamp the books afterwards, as proof that a service was done.

Herco please find out if they only require the last service to be @ an accredited rmi workshop - this usually the case unless the policy is not matured (6 months since inception)
also it sounds as if you only had 1 required service since taking ownership so i dont see the big deal and it should be easy to get the books up todate
