Hi everyone! The name is Sebastian / Sebz and I’m a first-time BMW owner although I’ve had a passion for the brand since the days of Williams F1. I’ve spent the last decade or so of my life in and around Volkswagens though, and recently stepped down as chairman of the VW Club of SA for reasons including the fact that I wanted to start getting more involved with my favourite marque. I work as a motoring journalist for an online publication, but since reading the rules, I don’t know if mentioning the company would be an infringement so I’ll keep my place of employment anonymous.

Anyway, I’ve got my first BMW and the first Bimmer in the family since my dad’s E30 325i and his 318i before that.

Just before lockdown, I bought a car that was almost perfect bar the engine.

Welcome, and congrats on the stunning car,
but that All-Road 2.7tt  :inlove: :inlove: :inlove:

Tell me, are they really that unreliable and a pain to work on ? always loved the noise these things make ! ... and the gadgets they come with.

Well I’ve read a lot on the forums about the 2.7T and a lot of people love them while a lot hate them. It’s a direct fit for swaps on other A4s, so it’s a pretty popular conversion when things break.

My B6, however, was a 1.8T 20V. It had a K04 and all the supporting mods but I never had any issues with it. Sold with over 365 000 kms with the motor never being opened. About 160k of that was with the K04 on.

A local guy that has done an AWD conversion on his A4 DTM built the motor and did K04 but got bored, so he’s doing the 2.7T swap. If I find a thread when the ECU and harness arrive, I’ll link it here.

Awesome, thanks a lot, I would appreciate that. I know the differences between the standard 2.7 and the s4 variant was just the ecu and ecu connector, I'm keen to see a local do it, so we can see what it would realistically cost in Rands.

The one thing is that keeps deterring me is those damn audi V engines are such a pain to work on because of poor placement of components (timing chain at the back) and no room to work on or spin a wrench really.

Maybe if someone else it will be more motivating.

Yeah, Audi likes making work for the people who maintain its cars. A mate of mine has a V8 A8 and a V10 RS6. Both have had the motor come out a couple of times for minor stuff.
