Gizmo had referred me to Peter to have a look at my car, it was suspected that I had offset the cam timing when I replaced the vanos seals resulting in a blow-back into the intake manifold.
I visited Peter In December and after a test drive it was decided that the vanos seals needed to be replaced as the car was not performing as expected from a M54B25. There was quite a bit of hesitation low down and it battled below 1500rpm.
I chatted to Peter earlier this week and I realized that it had not made him aware of the blow-back issue. Anyone who's chatted to peter knows he likes to talk, a lot, much to my benefit. He took the time to chat about my experiences with the car and from that he decided to first do a compression test.
The Beisan seals finally arrived this week and I dropped off the car with Peter on Wednesday. Compression was good so then we chatted again and he decided to read the codes before replacing the vanos seals. Peter contacted me again and informed me that he was getting a MAF error and the injectors were running at 100% probably due to the lack of MAF readings.
After some phone calls I remembered Gizmo changed the MAF on his wife's X3. I picked up the car from Peter yesterday and I drove straight through to Gizmo who fitted the MAF.
Fast forward to this morning. I start the car and immediately notice a difference, nothing of the usual morning cold start sputtering that I've been become accustomed to. Cold start procedure completes quite smoothly, the revs drop and off I go. I drive fairly sedately, short-shifting and keeping the revs below 3000rpm during the drive of approx. 8km between home and the rivonia onramp to the N1 south. This type of driving style is different to my usual, owing to issues detailed above, so I couldn't really confirm a difference.
Once on the highway, I hit slow traffic between Rivonia and William Nicol. Here the difference becomes noticeable, changing lanes becomes a lot easier when I changing lanes in 2nd gear. The slow procession up the hill to the William Nicol off ramp had me keeping a higher gear than usual. The new MAF has also yielded a 2l/100km fuel consumption improvement, the trip from Gizmo/home/work including traffic has registered 8.9l/100km.
A massive thank you to Peter, many shops would have simply done the requested work without having a look at the problem as a whole. Even more shops would have opted for the more expensive repair work.
Many thanks to Gizmo as well, I've received great service over the last couple of years and I can't fault his advice or work ethic. Oh, and the MAF as well, stealers eye-watering price of R6200 was heavy to say the least.
