Hi all,

I have a 1972 2002. I have owned it for 3 months, puts a smile on my face everyday.

The plan is to do a sort of rolling restoration, starting with a full suspension and steering rehab.

I'll be sharing the madness here along the way.

Very nice welcome to the Zforum.

You must hook up with Luis Malhou he is very knowledgeable with these cars and has 2 and a couple of other classics!

Nice 02, she looks in good nick.

Body and paint looks in good condition and keep those wheels!!

As you mentioned a good place to start is with running gear. Remove all suspension and replace all moving bits and all the bushes. All available from BMW or Walloth and Nesch if you going OEM. For a more sporty feel try Jaymic or Ireland Engineering.Shocks to Koni or Bilsteins. Our exchange rate is not helping and you can budget around 25-30K for all that.

Second thing you can do is replace all the rubbers on the body, door rubbers, window rubbers, light seals and rubbers, door handle rubbers. While all the glass and exterior parts are off you can get someone to do a good paint restore, a nice cut and polish if the paint is good will make the car look a million dollars .

Polish up the crome if no rust and then give the engine a strip down to bare essentials and detail the engine compartment.

GLW all that, shes a beauty.

Thanks!

Yes the wheels are definitely not going anywhere, in fact I have the 5th one in the boot as the spare.

Shocks at the moment are top of the list, all I can seem to find are Bilsteins (the HD's) or Koni's , obviously these are a great choice, but they do come with a R10k price tag at the moment. I know Ian Glass down here in CPT can make me shocks, otherwise do you know if Monroe or Gabriel still make them? I can find the rears from Gabriel, but not the front inserts.

Ireland, Jaymic and BavAuto all have some great stuff, almost pulled the trigger in the shop there many a time!

I have a friend coming back from Belgium in the next month, so I will check out Wallothnesch and of course BMW.

No, the front inserts are only made by a few companies, Bodge, Bilstein, Koni, Spax, and one more but I forgot now. EDIT: KYB was the other one, cheap, but I have heard many bad things about them.

If you go crazy, I know that KW and Penske can rebuild your front struts into a monotube damper, but that will cost you an arm and a leg.

Cheapest you will find I guess will be Spax (you can get them from jaymic iirc), some people like them, others hate them, but they are damn stiff.

More people seem to be moving away from Bilstein to Koni (Just ask Tommy or TobyB on the FAQ), as the Konis Have better wheel control and a more pliable ride, but still stiff. The Bilsteins last forever, but it seems that they are over damped, even HDs, for anything other than race spec coils. jrhone will swear by HD Billies and IE Stage II (He cut his, so they are even stiffer than stock) springs for fast road handling.

I replaced my front shocks with Bodge (OEM) units, and the rear ones with Gabriel, and I have slightly stiffer springs, and they handle pretty well. But definitely not as level as modern sport scars, although it does damn well over uneven twisties.

Also remember, you don't want to control your body(sprung mass) with your shocks, you need stiffer springs for that, you only want to dampen the unsprung masses (Wheels, Brakes, Strut, 1/2 Shock, 1/2 Control arm, etc.)

I would recommend Koni's for stiffer springs, and Bodge for stock springs.

Regards
Jacques (Yea, its me again... lol)

EDIT: You can also look into some stiff anti-roll-bars as they will still keep a soft ride with much flatter body control, but it does affect understeer/oversteer if you go to far on one side.

Hi again! ;)
Thanks for all the info, you mean Boge shocks I'm guessing? Were you able to find a set locally?

I'm planning on some H&R springs and some bilsteins. In the interim i'd like to source some Boge shocks locally if possible.

ARB's are coming back from Belgium, hopefully the fit in luggage :fencelook:

Wow, yes, Boge... Too much coffee this morning it seems. Bad Jacques!

I couldn't find front inserts anywhere locally, so I imported mine from W&N. Cost me about R1200 a few years ago.

In retrospect, I would rather have saved up a bit more for DA Konis, or Bilstein SA can take your existing shocks (doesn't have to be billies) and rebuild them to your spec for about the same price as you can import them (about R2900 last time I asked), and then you have custom valving to suit your needs.

Also remember that your BMW dealer will be able to import Bilstein shocks for you.

Regards
Jacques

Yeah just nipped down to my local BMW dealer, they can get Boge in about 10-15 working days.

I think I'm just going to pull the trigger on the Bilsteins/Koni's :)

Correct me if I am wrong (cylone), I think the guys in JHB that do Konis have a coilover set for front and rear, around 15k all done, however the problem is then the car is not original and its more race setup and are more cluncky and noisy because of camber setup plates etc.Only speaking of what I have heard, Cyclone has more depth here.

She it too lovely to go non OEM,chat to Moranor, he quoted prices to ex Forum guy Jandre for his 2002. I will also be going to Moranor for my 1602 build. My non oem 2002 is going coilovers.

However doint new rubbers all round freshens up a cars age so well. Especially when rubbers are hard and brittle. Really makes a cars look stand out.

So 42 years ago today my little 2002 left the factory.

Happy Birthday Boris! (yes he's a boy)

He's getting new ball joints fitted for his birthday :inlove:

Here's a shot from a recent road trip up the west coast.
