525e running rich

So, this evening I got a chance to get my new project. A 1987, e28 525e. So far I have noticed that it runs very, very rich. Lots of black smoke out the exhaust. As I have never owned one, I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction. Or at least give me some idea where to start.

One last thing, the gearbox seems to slip out of gear while driving, I'm hoping its low on oil.

Thanx

AFAIK the E28 525e uses Bosch Motronic fuel injection. There are many sensors (e.g. MAF, fuel pressure) and electronic valves (e.g. idle control, cold-start injector, thermo-time switch) that can malfunction, causing a rich fuel mixture.

There are plenty Motronic troubleshooting guides on the old interwebs. Here is a good start.

The only E28 that I worked on had a similar issue and it was a few things that caused this, intake manifold gaskets causing vacuum leaks, brittle vacuum lines and pipes and a dirty airflow meter.

Gonna check the link blue shirt suggested, and take it from there. What makes things hard is not knowing where to start lol.
