330i into 320i goes ...

Eish! :biglol:

I will never get a 330i at the price I got this 320i ... even the 318i's sell for 25-30k more than I got it for ...

Gizmo has done it plenty of times. 325i to 330i conversion though.

That was two tourings if I remember correctly. Why we never got the tourings in that motor still puzzles me.

What is your target power figure like and what do you want to achieve with this build?

Won't you need a new ECU and different engine mounts and a different cooling system etc etc?

If the 320i was such a bargain, sell it for decent profit and get a 330i. Converting will probably cost a hell of a lot more in the end, compared to just buying a standard 330i.

In that case try and buy a written off car with all the bits you will need. Then afterwards sell the parts out of your car with whatever is left.

Both engines are M54's so I guess in theory they should fit

But I agree with what's been said. Not worth it. Rather sell the 320i and buy a 330i.

Thanks guys, just asked for some future reference, from experience I know it costs, rebuilt a E30 325i a while back - eventually cost more than I sold the car for ... and a week later they were racing with it :argh:

it might be possible to stroke the 320i to that capacity using a 330i crank, rods and pistons, tuning should be relatively simple with a dastek uniq and most likely running 330i or 325 injectors. however the stock bore on a 320i is 80mm where on the 325i and 330i it is 84mm. im not too sure how well a 320 block will respond to removing 4mm off it however it is an option. my suggestion is speak to Gizmo and racing snake as they both have Experience with the E36 and E46 range of petrol engines.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll get it performing as well as possible, ironing out all the faults before doing a motor swop.

At the moment I'll be able to take it on with my 4-pot E30 on uphills ... that is how bad it is performing at present.

Rather concentrate on getting the 320i engine back to good health - cannot expect it to perform like a 330i, but, make no mistake, a well running 320i is no slouch!

Get rid of the 320i and find yourself a 330i.

You will not be disappointed:thumbs:

You will need to change not only the complete engine but the airbox, MAF, intake manifold, exhaust, injectors, throttle body, intake boots, gearbox, clutch/flywheel, propshaft, diff, 330i front and rear brakes, 330i rear trailing arms ect. As already stated, cost wise its much cheaper to buy a 330i with all the right bits to begin with...

You can use your existing engine mounts, wiring harness, headers, sump, alternator, cooling system parts, oil filter housing and all the other bits that bolt onto the block as both the 320i and 330i use the M54 motor. The 320i head has 3mm smaller valves than the 330i head yet they share the same exhaust cam, intake cams are different with the 330i one having more lift.

Your original 320i ECU will run the 330i motor in standard form, its the same ECU for both cars but to get the most out of it have the 320i eprom chip replaced with a 330i eprom chip.
