I completely understand your statements about the fuel. but how does start and drive affect the turbos on the diesels.


Also, is idling necessary before switching off on a diesel. If yes, how long is acceptable.

Look, a turbo is made to spin. As long as it is lubricated, it can spin. It is more important for the engine to get up to temp before thrashing it, as the shape and clearances change with temperature. So just driving from start will do nothing, but don't thrash it before you get up to operating temp. If you take it easy, the turbo wont work too hard.

As for the idling after a drive, it depends on how hot the turbo is. Diesels run much cooler than petrols, which is why they can have VNT turbos and the turbos aren't water cooled. But if you drive hard, you will have to let it cool, and it does not cool very quickly. What I do is I try not to use any boost for the last 3 mins of my journey. If I drive it hard, I will let it idle for a couple of extra minutes before I switch off, which depends on how hard I drove it.
