328i power advice..

I have a 1997 Bmw 328i 141kw motor. Single Vanos. When i accelarate in 4th gear (flat out) then the fuel consumption meter is moving up and down and so does the power stronger and weaker.

The 4th gear was just a test, it happens in all the gears. Whats wrong?

Sounds like you clutch is finished

Thanks but it is not the clutch. It is dufficult to explain.
What is actually happening is it seems as if the performance system is surging. Performance is slightly dropping and picking up in short intervals (intermittend) while accelerating. The fuel consumtion meter is also moving slightly up and down while accelerating at full throttle.
After a diagnostic test the cam sensor were replaced, with no improvement.

Is your battery / alternator fine?

Try disconnectiong your airflow meter and then try again - if full power is restored then thats your problem - also check the fuel pump and filter

Good luck

how can your fuel consumption meter be anywhere but maxed out at full throttle...

Andrew you are right. I select fourth gear on low revs and as speed increase the meter comes down from the max mark and then fluctuates. This is just to proof the surging.

I will diconnect airflow meter, i think this might be a step in the right direction. Will report when done. Thanks Zabbo.

My guess was also the airflow meter... When you disconnected it while idling is there any surge/drop in the revs? Try stopping an afm from a mate or something... Did the fault codes only find the cam sensor? Lastly we're there any modification like cone filter or anything else done to the car and when the last service done? Old spark plugs/fuel filter can also be suspect!

it could be a problem with your spark plug lead and or coil, could be misfiring and youre losing spark switch on your car go and open the bonnet and listen for any "sparking" noise
