325Ci vs 330d

Hi Guys,

Need some suggestions, currently i have a E46 325Ci m sport auto, 130k, love her to bits, only prob is, econ is sitting at 14.4l per 100, all town driving, and driving like a girl. If i drive her with a heavy foot, she turns at about 16/17l per 100. Did a 200km highway trip this weekend, and she gave me 11.2l per 100 sitting at 120km all the way. Diagnostics are all clean, and the handbrake is defiantly off... did a service (oil filter, oil, air filter, spark plugs) about 5000km back, did not change anything. She still has her original petrol filter/aux pump thingy in. R1100k at dealership, worth replacing? Can blow through filter, only little pressure. Engine is lacy, but runs & idles smooth. Is the 14.4l/100km normal economy for around the town?

Can i blame the auto box? Between 4100rmp and 4200rpm she has a slight temporary loss in power, then its back again, very slight, also changeover does seem a bit off or not on time as needed. Auto oil change needed??

Test drove a 330d manual, love the torque, economy on medium driving was 9.3l/100km after about 30min or 25km.

Trade the 325Ci in for the 330d ?? Yes or no

I know there is a big red light the comes on regarding the turbo and injectors, should I worry about them, or take care of it when it comes around? I tend to average a total distance of 800km per month, so the oil services does not bug me that much.

Any insight will help

Yeah, somethings wrong with your car.

On the other hand, if the 330d is a 6 speed, go for it, although, you should be getting money back on the trade-in. Ci's have higher values than sedans, and the diesels are VERY hard to sell...

330D definately I know this might sound biased coz I have a 330d but honestly I havent had one single issue with the 330d the 2003 2004 models with the new engines were built much better and they rectified all the turbo issues. the only suggestion I would say is make sure you just service it on time. so I would say go for it:thumbs:

Plus it would only cost you 1 tank of diesel a month for your 800km

what I mean is BMW looked at the turbo issues when developing the new engine so technically then I think it was late 2002 to 2005 the 330d were better built and should have less problems. I dont mean they dont develope issues like any other car...

i traded my 04 ci exclusive for an 05 330d a/t individual

the consumption is similar to what i used to get -sometimes up to 18L.

did software-decat-cia & filter -lingered around 11-12 in traffic & 8-9 on the open road -decent driving

the day i sold her - i unpluged the chip and it went back to 14-15 -so i think the chip did the trick -had a little more pluck as well:=):

Wow, that's a really nice first post with no open questions. Seriously, if you want to make statements like that, you better substantiate them.

8-9 on the open road & 18 in town is terrible. Are you sure she was 100%. My car does not do close to that, and it is older tech. I get 6-7l/100 open road @ 128 gps speed, and 11-12l/100 in traffic. And that is regardless of whether I drive like a matric laaitie, or a grandmother who cannot level the accelerator when she extends her leg...

i thought the same, had it checked by 3 dealers at 1250 a pop each time - no joy- one of them reckon the later ci and verts were guzzlers ( cedar isle )
then again the coupe has a different feel compared to my sedan
i test drove a 04 vert a/t last week -brought back memories after seeing the average was on 17.1L .wife still wants her car back- guess i'll be going down that road again

@ P1000, you would feel the same if your car isnt driving like a bmw at all, its driving realy hard, it also feel as if the wheels vibrate, its so difficult to tel someone what the car is doing, you must drive it to feel what he does, got the car last year Nov and the car went to 3 different dealers, 1st 1 said replace your tyres and I did and the prob was not fixed, oh and the R F wheel locked 2 times while driving, so BMW opend a "PUMA" case the case is closed but its not fixed, dealer 2 said its wheel alignment and the front shocks oka and it was done by the dealer, but still not fixed, dealer 3 said all 4 mags have pothole damage, ok now there is 4 new mags on that car and wheel alignment was done again and its stil the same, if the dealers cant sort the prob out, jst think how I must feel!!!!!!! Dont get me wrong I love BMW but at the moment im not happy(the car is milking me cuz i mst put on new tyres again, the wear on the tyres is uneven, so its 3 sets of tyres in 8 months is this normal?????)

beemer4, sounds like your problem is generic and could have happened to any 3, so no need to go hatin' on the 330d... It does sound like you got a lemon and a proper mechanic should be able to figure it out. Sadly, BMW don't employ any mechanics, only fitters.

Apart from that, the OP is looking at E46 models...
