320d VERY dead in low RPM's

hi all,

got a "new" E46 320d few weeks ago, already went for a nice big service and replaced some things.
performax tuning said she is still in a VERY good mechanical condition for her age, turbo is also still 100's and no excessive smoking.

but she is veeeeery lazy below 2000rpm, then all of the sudden BOOM the turbo spools and there we go...

i thought moving to a diesel it would be nice chirpy in the lower rpm range and pulling away in 2nd would be a hassle free job.

was i under the wrong impression or is there something to be looked at?

Perhaps your CAT is blocked?

Here are five signs that something may be wrong with your catalytic converter:

Your vehicle's fuel efficiency suddenly drops.
Your vehicle doesn't accelerate when you step on the gas pedal.
Your vehicle may refuse to start.
Your vehicle fails an emissions test.
The MIL or Check Engine light comes on.

Vacuum leak.

You need to do a vacuum line block off from the vacuum manifold for all vacuum lines except the one that leads to the turbo vacuum cannister. Then you need to replace the remaining vacuum line with a much more durable hose.

My thread has plenty info on this. Check the link in my signature.

nope...none of these symptoms....consumption is around 11.7km/L

if it was a vacuum leak would it not have similar symptoms right through the reve range Chef?

Not from my experience.

My old 5er had a problem where I would put my foot flat and it would crawl along slowly, with grannies in Conquests overtaking me, until I hit around 2500rpm and then foooooooooookkkkk ALLLLLL THE POWERRRRRR!!!!!

Was a vacuum leak :=):

I agree that it might be a vacuum leak.
But the second gear pull away part is not really a diesel's strong point. You would really have to be heavy on the clutch to do that ,especially on the 320d.

maybe i was just overestimating the diesel - it's my 1st diesel after all.

coming from 2.0 Astra Turbo i'm used to some oomph

I would suggest researching the vacuum line delete operation and tackle it. It's not too difficult. The best work that can ever be done on your own car is if you do it yourself.

Hey Tjopper, try answering your phone buddy!!!!

My 320d is also a bit pap under the 1500 +- 2000 rpm range.

But on pull away as long as I don't bog the clutch then its no issues.

ie: As long as I drive properly and pay attention to what I am doing.

Youll see if you keep the her in the 2000 to 3000 rpm range, there will be smooth and linear power all the way with fuel consumption between 5.9 and 7ish depending on your combined driving.

I cant remember, is your AT or manual?

I am at around 6.4 at the moment BUT in my defence, there has been some "spirited" driving to sort out issues with my youngest - school problems, hope your pellet isn't in Blouborsie by the way, child protection are on their way to the school as I type this reply.

Sunday I was down to 4.6 - I should have taken a pic actually.

maybe i was just expecting too much.

but she's going on for a mapping to either Excede or RK Motion - both quoted me the same so just doing some research on client feedback then end of the month she will see some roller time probably.

Ag no buddy, so its like that hey? If I bribe with a tjop from the braai?

Its about how you drive and use the torque rather than the rev range later in the boost like on a petrol turbo car.

Remember these dirty diesels work differently to the inline turbo 4's.

Also, bimmers are deceptively quick. Theyre far smoother and more composed so they feel slow but theyre getting a shift on in fact.
