320d Questions and General Preventative maintenance HELP

Hi Guys

So traded in my 2nd 1 series for a 2011 E90 320d LCI M Sport.
This is the first time I will be owning a Diesel ,my first turbo car, my first Auto car and it will be my first Sedan. (I suddenly feel old regarding the latter)
I am not all that clued up with Diesels so need your help.
The car has 95000km and about a week of Mplan left, the car is currently at the dealer , they did the service , and picked up Brake pads need changing as well as the PDC unit that has an error.
I will probably take delivery on Monday…
Is there anything I need to check when collecting? What is general preventative maintenance on a diesel?
Does the auto box need a service? What does it entail and cost involved?
whats the deal with idling of the car when switching on and before turning the engine off?
does this really pro long the turbo??
I have went through the Mplan history thoroughly and besides normal oil changes, filters, a few bulbs, brakes and a new Battery the only thing I picked out of the ordinary was a “belt pulley, power steering pump crack” which Im not sure if it was that serious as only an amount of R1300 was paid under mplan.

Feedback and advice will be appreciated.

If you feel any issue with the car, mention it now to the dealer. If the gears arent smooth, acceleration not linear( somewhat), or consumption(oil/water/fuel) is weird

Mine's on 110000km's and touch wood no issues yet. I've only heard good things about them and that they are very reliable.

I would also take full advantage of the motorplan before it expires. Complain about anything you notice. I picked up a wobble in the clutch and they swapped it out for me as well as new discs and shocks.

Maintenance wise I know there's something about a balancer that's quite expensive to replace and other than that, the turbo. I let mine warm up and cool down nicely. I plan to service it myself or with Ross Duncan in Midrand. Not aware of any other issues with them?

Gearbox service @ 100 000km will be great preventative maintenance.

Unfortunately, with a week left of motorplan you wont really be able to fix ALL pre-existing issues, BUT with that said;

1. Your car is with BMW now, so I am sure they will fix any underlying issues.
2. You've checked the MP report, and it doesn't seem like a problematic car
3. If looked after, its a pretty reliable car.

Congrats on the ride, please post pics once you take delivery.:clapper:

I have a 2010 320d M with 172000 on the clock. I took delivery of the car at 135000 and I have had no issues. Here are a few of my rituals:

a) When I start the car up in the morning I drive it very gently for about 5 minutes to get the oil up to temp. The catch here is that there is no oil temp read out so this is a guess.

b) If I have been driving the car very hard I usually drive it off the boost for a few minutes and idle for a minute before turning the car off

c)I change oil every 6000km as the car is over 100000km

d) Try avoiding driving short distances as your DPF will get blocked. You want to drive the car on the highway as often as you can.

e) Some guys have reported issues with swirl flaps, I have not had this issue but it might be worth checking out.

Happy driving and have fun:clapper:

Dear All

The E90 320d does NOT have DPF - just a normal Catalytic converter. The F30 320d has DPF. I know this for a fact as my 2011 (320d - 135 kW) was confirmed by BMW as NOT having a DPF.

Gearbox OIL must be changed so as to avoid problems later. Give Ricardo a call at ZF Services (079 349 1123). ZF are the Agents for the Gearbox. They will normally change the fluid, sump, filter and reset adaptations. Cost is about R4.5k.

Always use 50ppm diesel.

The 2011 320d does not have Swirl Flaps.

Enjoy the Car!!

Thanks

this should clear up the DPF issue

Cars WITHOUT a Diesel Particulate Filter

BMW – E36 & E46 320D Models do not have a DPF and the E90 163BHP models also did not have a DPF fitted, until the 177BHP engine was rolled out in 2007. This also applies to the detuned 2.0 318D engine. The 118D and 120D are the same engines as used in the 3 series, although the 123D had a DPF factory fitted from its release. All X1’s are fitted with DPF’s
