320d purchase

Good day all,

I am new to the forum, but not new to BMW. I had an old BMW 2002. I loved that little car.

I am now looking to enter the great brand again, but things have change slightly since my 2002 days

I need a car for my wife and she loves the 3 Series. Looked at various options and dealers in Cape Town and believe that Diesel is the best route for us as she is doing minimal km's per day.

I have the option for a 2008 pre FL with 80 000kms. Other dealer says that will be a huge mistake. 80 000km is a lot of mileage - according to him and Diesel is best kept in plan. I don't have the funds to purchase a 2010 or 2011 now.

I know some guys who have done over 150 000km - trouble free - so ja....

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Diesel does not like short distances - they take long to warm up, and the DPF will clog if you don't do >30km highway runs more than 2 times a month (over time).

The dealer is trying to separate you form your money. Any car is best if kept in plan, but certainly not most economical. My diesel has about 290kkm on the clocks.

Then the diesel should work great. Don't be too scared of getting out of motorplan, just keep some money in the bank for in case.

Are the costs much higher on diesel?

I am inquiring about a 323i 2008 tomorrow. I am suspecting high mileage.

i bought my 2008 323i last year feb and had 62000km on,now sitting over 80000km.

so should be in that km range unless some one has done alot of traveling

80 000km is nothing, i read a thread were the diesel did more than 220 000km without replacing injectors, remember Bmw diesel tecnology improving year by year, its not the 2005 320d were talking about here, its the newer version, lots of turbo problems on E46 diesels.. Go for it buddy, but on the other hand i am a huge petrol fan, rather spend a few more $ on fuel than thousands on maintenance.

The Black MSport 323i has 83000km. Price is R190 000. It is apparently a 2007 model.

To extend MP will cost R9800 for a year and 5000km.

Petrol vs Diesel....

IMO maintenance costs is much over muchness with either model. Where you save on consumption, you pay on shorter service intervals. Or where you save on spark plugs you pay on injectors. You could end up with a lemon on either one or you could have a well cared for car that is good for another 200K KM.

Personally, I like the torque curve on a 6 cylinder diesel mated to a auto box, cos I'm a lazy bugger. Some prefer a manual with a 6 cylinder straight six petrol that sings at the red line. Bottom line is go test drive both and see what you prefer - either way, they're both good BMW's

Unless there is a problem with the car, the MP extension is not worth it for that little mileage. You'd be lucky to squeeze in a single service there. Yes, you get peace of mind, but I'd rather put that money in the bank for a rainy day, if something does go wrong with the car.

Diesel +10000
My previous Polot Tdi had 160 k km when I traded it in for the 320d and I'm planning on taking it to 200k km

welcome and enjoy your car bud!

please dont forget to check if the car is not 10mm lower on either of the vehicle's sides, if so, it might fail roadworthy and be perfectly normal:bravo:

Hi all,

after much deliberation and negotiation; my wife is going to use a 2011 320i M Sports pack for a year or so.

We want a new Diesel, so will save for it.

The 320i; although "pup", drives well. :=):

Thank you all for your comments and input.

I will post pics of the family car later this week.
