hi there, i am looking for advise from some of the more expenced bm drivers. i am planning to buy a 320d 06' model for R170 000. my issue is the maintenance plan is bloody expensive R1 per km. i do high mileage roughly 50000kms annually. could someone advise on the maintenance costs experienced over 100 000kms as well as the fuel consumption. also are there any reputable contact persons in the durban area that i can have my car repaired cheaper

Whats the current mileage on it?
The worst thing you have to replace is probably the turbo. Heard they go often.
Mileage wise... in town i sit at about 6l/100km which gives me about 1000kms.
on the freeway/long distance it will sit on 4.8-5l/100kms which gives me about 1200kms.

My 320d is chipped though, it helped with the consumption alot...

mernynr.

Do a search on a recent topic E39 530d we discussed last week.

If you go through the thread from top to bottom, you will get a excellent idea of what to expect from the diesels..

Good luck, and welcome to the family..

An '06 320d should not give any turbo problems, they have been sorted by that time. If you are doing that crazy mileage, I presume its going to be highway? In that case there shouldn't be much to be afraid of, highway miles is completely different than city miles (although the aircon compressor and alternator brushes usually disagree). One thing that bothers me is that R1/km - it is usually a sigh of a dealers confidence of something expensive breaking. For comparison, a 2005 745i will cost 45c/km to extend(IIRC), and parts on that car is really expensive!

No dude,

Well that is interesting, my 2005 730d cost R1.10 for 100 to 115 round about, I recall it was like 20k, I can look it up exactly though

IIRC, all the turbo issues on the older E46 320d's were at altitude and not at the coast - someone can correct me here if I'm wrong .....

True, all the turbo crap was sorted out with the e46. Mine has 200k on the clock, turbo healthy as a horse. Drive like a granny most of the time though. But ask Zale, TORQUE on tap, there is no feeling like it.

I must say, my 320d (also chipped) only gets 7.6l/100km I do drive like a demon tho... On long distances I get 5.2l/100 but thats at 145km/h average. Had no problem with diesel to date, and I drive it hard!
