320d E90 Fuel Consumption

Hi,
I hope I am not posting incorrectly...... I have a 320d E90 2007 MSport Pack Automatic with Sunroof 41000 km currently. My currect fuel consumption is 8 to 8,2 L/100km mixed driving at about 80% N1 from JHB to Centurion in the morning and from Centurion back to JHB at the evening and about 20% in JHB north suburbs and I think its a bit too high. I am comparing it to my 320d E46 2003 Manual Exclusive, which had 6.5 L/100km, the same driving style, same roads (except the current road works) and so on. I have taken the car for checkup twice to Forsdicks in Sandton and they found nothing. Also to JSN and they replaced some fuel mixers and injectors but its still the same. Please give opinions about the fuel consumption.

Maybe the E90, is a little heavier, in kerb weight than the E46. I've heard that E90 and E46 are ostensibly the same engine, with a few tweaks here and there, but with uprated fuel pump, etc, to give the added kW, but I don't know how far that is true....

By the way, 100% correct place to post and welcome to the forums! Show us you and your ride in the "Off topic lounge", under "show yourself"

Well... here is something to make you feel better. 8,2 L/100km = about 12.2km per Liter. My 318i gets about 9km per Liter in urban driving, but goes up to about 11 maybe 12 on long distance. :mmm:

I think it was Hellas that said that if he drives at about 100km - 120km on long distance he can get up to 17km per Liter in his E46 320d.

I don't think 12 is to bad for mixed driving and considering that the E90 is just under the 1.5 tons mark.

Thats about right for a 320d auto - considering the traffic u put up with. With mixed driving on my MT 320d, I get like 12.9 km/l (just checked this morning). i drive like 50km a day - with around 25km being on the highway - with slight-medium traffic (centurion to pta). Sometimes enjoying a bit of spirited driving, which can up the consumption slightly. I'm convinced its the added weight of the car that makes it a bit more thirsty.

On my E46 320d it did 4.5 L/100km from Mabalingwe to Bryanston me driving and a passenger. I drove same as mine E90 but the 2008 engine for two days and it was about 6.7 L/100km, some less trafic I have to say.

Liv, I agree with waht you say in addition to the wider tyres and the slightly open sunroof. I just wanted the experience and the opinion of the other people here

I've heard some guys saying that the run flat tyres increases fuel consumption quite a bit as well - not sure how true this is though???

msm, the run flats are definitely heavier, but this would add to the total weight of the car. in my case the width of the tyres (225 front and 255 rear) adds to the fuel consumption definitely.

+1 So does the tyre pressure and condition of the shocks etc. All the smaal thing add up to decrease the consumption. But then again, I've seen that certain mods/tuning to improve consumption is really not worth it since the payback for those mods take way too long to be feasible.

Hey joroGVG
The avg fuel consumption on my 2006 E90 320d is 7.1 l/100km. The fact that I am at the coast would make a difference but I am never shy of the accelerator. 50% of my driving is with more than one person in the car and daily trips are 50% open road and 50% traffic. For such a heavy car I think the consumption is reasonable. My previous car was a golf 4 1.9TDI and it's consumption was 7 l/100km. Just my 5 cents.

joroGVG, nope standard and manual gears. Car on order is auto so wonder how much consumption will increase.

The fuel consuption on my 2006 E91 320d is 6.4 l/100km on the open road at 120/140 and in a mixed cycle 7.1 l/100km. It still has run flat tyres which I would like to sell in the next month (70% thread left) to change to normal tyres. I think this will also improve fuel consumption as well as a very much more comfortable ride.

My 320d Steptronic 2011 E90 is a real fuel saver. From Hermanus to Windhoek at aprox 130km/h = 5.8lit/100km and back to Hermanus 5.4lit/100km. It has 40 500 on the clock and runs on Run flats. The ride is much more comfortable than my 320d 2006 model.

Well decatting my 330d dropped consumption by just over 1litre / 100 km. This will pay for itself VERY quickly.
