320d Downpipe and decat

Hi guys

Okay, so my car is going in to Garage 808 for the turbo actuator issue.
I read a lot about Downpipe, decat and DPF removal.
Exactly what does that mean and what advantage and disantvantage does it have.
If the downpipe is fitted, must the 'cats' be remove, and what about the DPF?
I just heard about all these things, but being not a very mecanical guy, so don't understand.
I would like a bit more power, but the economy is more important, and don't want to spend thousands on software at this stage.
And don't want my car to smoke to much, or have a strange exhaust sound.

Your help would be appreciated guys in this decision, as I'm totally clueless. Its a 2008 320d N47 130kw pre LCI

I drive a 2007 320d, I took it to Xcede last Friday for a downpipe and remap. All I can say is that it was worth every cent, the car has a lot more power, it is more fuel efficient, the throttle response is much better and its got a deeper tone to it that I love

As far as I understand the 320d has a unit that is both a CAT and a DPF, this unit it replaced with a downpipe. The advantages of this is that the turbo spools up faster and heat escapes quicker as there is no resistance in that part of the exhaust any more. The main disadvantage would just be more smoke which I've barely noticed on my car thus far (Not much worse than before).

I would recommend Xcede as they did a great job on my car with good service, you can also check out the other forum sponsors

Oh and economy goes down by about 1l to 1.5l / 100km

Thanks for the info, what did they charge you for that? As I see there's a Xcede agent in CT now as well

I have answered this many times and if I'm not mistaken in China thread too.

320d does not have a cat it has a dpf. They are both emissions filters. Now a filter slows flow. Keeping the hot exhaust gasses near the turbo. Removing it let's your turbo run cooler and healthier giving it a quicker spool and longer life. You will need cat foolers if you don't get a remap. Which you can speak to an exhaust shop about.

The only disadvantage to removing it is your car will smoke when tuned. However if it is not tuned. It will not smoke if it is healthy without a tune.

You should see a drop on fuel consumption with the dp.

Thanks Dieselfan

I will talk to Colin at Garage 808 on monday when I take my car in, they did say something on the quote about re programing after it was taken out.

Thanks again, think I will have it done then.

No, I asked for a quote to have the cats and DPF removed, so they said something on the quote about reprograming after the cats and DPF are taken out.

But, how does it work, if they fit a downpipe, does it mean the DPF is automatically been removed?
(Apologies, ek is eintlik n afrikaanse outjie, my engels partykeer bietjie krom en skeef hahaha)

You already have a downpipe but the downpipe has a dpf fitted to the centre of it. They can't the dpf out and weld a pipe in between.

How much did they quote you?

Yeah well garage 808 seem even more clueless in this case. And they're meant to be the experts. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Yeah interesting. But what's more interesting is garage 808 wanted to remove the manifold for the dedpf. Probably thinking there were cats in the manifold.... :fencelook:
