320d Auto box questions?

Hi All.

So I'm looking into getting myself an e90 320d auto, I have heard some speculation that the auto gear box can be a bit of a problem regarding the fact that the gear box oil should be changed regularly and that this can cost you a lot? Also how reliable are these cars and what are the issues surrounding them? What year models should I look at and which models should i avoid? Also how much is to much millage and what should I take into consideration if looking at one with over 120k km on it? I am really looking on saving on my fuel bill every month as my st150 isnt the most economical little car. I do also enjoy a mod here and there and would definitely see myself doing some work on the 320d eg. down pipe, software, induction and exhaust?

Any help regarding these questions would be much appreciated. I look forward to your input and help. Thanks :withStu:

Cars are very reliable, if looked after properly. Check service and maintenance history prior to purchase. Gearbox should be serviced at 100 000km, and then you good to go for another 100 000km.

What year models should I look at and which models should i avoid?

I presume you are referring to the E90? E90's dont have any issues as far as the year goes. I would opt for a facelift model, which is more powerful. 08/09 model onwards.

Also how much is to much millage and what should I take into consideration if looking at one with over 120k km on it?

Again, the maintenance and service history will determine how much is too much. If properly looked after these E90's can go well over 300 000km.

They only known issues is the dual mass flywheel. It will probably fail somewhere between 100 000km and 150 000km

I do also enjoy a mod here and there and would definitely see myself doing some work on the 320d eg. down pipe, software, induction and exhaust?

If you want to maximize performance, and minimize your fuel bill this is the way to go!

Service intervals is +-15 000km.

I recently serviced my car, here is the breakdown of parts, minus the labour (Purchased from BMW, all original). Also keep in mind you dont necessarily need to replace all these parts every 15 000km.
Oil filter: R291
Diesel Filter: R619
Air Filter: R871
5.5l Shell Helix Oil From Midas : R302
