I have a 2005 318i manual 125000kms fsh good cond. I parked at a shopping centre and when I came out the car cranked over sort of unevenly then the starter just went kluk kluk kluk kluk [not the "fast' kluk kluk from a low battery] I had the car towed home but every time the starter would just kluk kluk and I also noticed that the headlights would come on while kluk klukking. I was towing it to the auto electrician and it started with a tow and ran perfectly. When I wanted to demonstrate the problem the car started perfectly 6 times. I drove off and within 500 metres the car cut out. [no warning or symptoms] On cranking the kluk kluk was again there. towed it to the auto elec , he phoned the next day to say he had vreplced the battery, I wasnt to happy cos from past mech experience I was sure that it wasnt the problem. We then ascertained that the battery was perfect. He phoned the next day to say he wanted to replace the crank sender unit @ R3500.00, but my gut says that that wont cure the cutting out and klukking. What worries me is that he said if that doesnt cure the problem he will put the sender into his stock. Seems to me its a trial and error thing and nothing decisive. I would pay up if I knew the problem would be solved. I have a feeling that it is some sort of relay or the likes causing the cutting out and then not having enough power to run the starter.
Can anyone please help me with advice cos I need to get mobile.
ps can the problem be diagnosed through the key at BMW
