316i Modification

Hi everyone.

I’m new here. I’ve recently purchased my first car, BMW 316i Sport 2013 model.

The car is clean and has enough power for every day use but I’m looking to get more out of the car in terms of power and looks.

I’ve looked on the BMW website and obviously the M Performance kit won’t fit the car as it is only the sport line and not M Performance line.

I’ve looked into remapping and piggy back systems for the car. The car is full stock with 100KW and 220NM.

If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations/advise on modifying the vehicle please drop a message below. Really appreciate it.

Hey dude.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your car!

Realistically speaking you could probably get a bit more power with a decent remap. Rather look at remap from a reputable tuner than a piggy back that's not customised to the south african climate.

It is worth bearing in mind that the N13 engine you have in your car is more designed around being a commuter than a performance car so it's never going to win races.

Suppose it comes down to what you want out of the car. It'll excel at being a comfortable, nice place to be to get you where you want to go safely and efficiently. However, if you want something more exciting I might then consider trading up to a 320d at the least

Welcome.
As above, it will come down to what you expect to get. You will be bale to get a bit more power with the typical booster car mods... but if you plan on regular aggressive driving, this car probably isn't going to be up to the challenge and will cost you a lot more to maintain (and repair) in the long term.
I agree with @"RAArmstrong". Rather look at a 320d. A quick scan of Gumtree says they can be bought for around the same price range, so perhaps that's something to look into before spending money on modding something that won't live up to your expectations.

Hi guys

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve looked at remapping as an option to get a bit more out of the engine. I will definitely be looking to upgrade to a 320d or 330d I’m the future.

In terms of the M Performance kit for a 316i - does anyone know of anyone who makes custom kits for the F30 316i?

Don't do too much to this car IMHO. Get a nice set of wheels if you want. Research the motor in that car. Your planned mod money may be better spent on the preventive work it needs.

Save the money and buy a car that you're going to mod cash at some point. Don't make the same mistake many people have made getting their first cars.

Definitely don't go to someone who claims they will make a custom kit for you. You are better off investigating scrap yards for suitable parts to do the m sport kit... but it is quite involved... others will have more info. I just remember this from other threads.

Welcome and congrats on your car man.

Well personally I wouldn't mod a 316i considering there's not many performance mods for it. I don't even think they make JB4 for a 316i, I think they only make it for 320i's and above.

The only things I'd do are maybe a few cosmetic changes like a spoiler, front lip or maybe a new set of wheels, etc.

I'm not sure how long you plan on keeping this car for but from the sounds of it you already mentioned that you would like something faster like a 320d or a 330d. So if I were you, instead of spending money on mods for this car, I'd save up for a faster car like a 330d or a 335i where you aren't as limited to performance mods as how you are in this case with the 316i.

But otherwise, don't feel down about your car being a 316i, at least you got wheels man, many people don't. But I definitely know the feeling of when you don't have the fastest of a range, like when I had my 320i, my friends would always pick on me because it wasn't a 335i yet they didn't have cars and everytime that happened, I always told them "well I like to see how you get home after tonight" LOL. Even today with the M240i, those same owes don't even have their own cars. So all I'm trying to say is don't let people put you off about your car being a 316i and that you're fortunate enough to have it. I hope you enjoy it and have many safe miles with it though. All the best

I have a 118i n13. It comes down to personal preference. Initially i did a stage 1 remap and it made a difference. I got greedy and did a stage 2 and damn i am impressed with the feel of it now. You not going to be 'winning races' but i sure do enjoy it more now.

@"TurboLlew" 91 000km. Thanks for the advice.

I’m looking at getting a stage 1 remap from ATM tuning in Durban. I’ve done a bit of research into them and their reviews seem positive.

I will definitely look at getting a new set of wheels. I think a set of black wheels would suit the car well.

@"nish_M240i" Thanks man. I definitely agree with you. The feeling of owning your own set of wheels beats anything. ?? The power on the 316 in sport mode isn’t too bad, however I am considering a stage 1 remap for a bit of a boost.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Much appreciated.

Bud personally rather focus on cosmetics and do an exhaust system or decat. I wouldn't tune this engine specifically at the risk of reliability.

If you gonna tune and remap, I would look at forum vendors first like @Sherwin@xcede for a remap.

You welcome to pop me a whatsapp and I can see what we can assist with in terms if cosmetic mods 065-950-6027

However, I would first get all preventative maintenance done before anything else.

Hi there and welcome. Congrats on the purchase of your BMW! Regardless of the model, it's a BMW and that is credit :) It's quality built and hopefully well spec'd. Secondly...where are the pics man?? Lol

My advice is always keep reliability at the top of the list and discuss this with your tuner of choice whoever that may be. There is a wealth of knowledge here from all the guys...from researching which model to buy, to upgrades, tyres, services and detailing...the guys here have helped me all the way. Keep asking and enjoy your ride whatever you choose to do with it.

If you keep the car stock, it will be much easier to sell on.
This is not a performance car, so investing in any mods will not strengthen your resale value. Also, if you go full AC Schnitzer, a 316i ACS does not have the same ring to it as a 330d/335i ACS.

My advice is to keep it stock and clean. Depending on the body colour, painting the rims gloss or matte black maybe a good option. You may also add a small racing stripe or two. Don't spend much money, noting that these motors are Peugeot/Mini derived and will likely start costing a bit to maintain after 100,000km.
