Sony and Panasonic are working on a new type of disc capable of holding up to 300GBs of information.

In a press release on Sony's website, the two companies announced that they have signed an agreement for the project.

"Both companies aim to improve their development efficiency based on the technologies held by each respective company, and will target the development of an optical disc with recording capacity of at least 300GB by the end of 2015," read the statement.

"Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored."

The proposed disc is aimed for professional usage in data-storage and video broadcasting.

Sony and Panasonic are no strangers to high-capacity optical discs, with both firms producing Blu-Ray discs.

That is true. I was starting to wonder what the point of these will be as flash memory goes so cheap these days anyway. Would probably not even be a viable backup solution. :fencelook:

I think its a flop, most new laptops dont even come with optical drives anymore, even pc's omit them these days.... solid state storage is the way of the future, if you want really high capacity storage tapes are probably still the best and most cost effective option ...

and considering most cars, hi-fis, dvd/Blu-ray players etc. have usb inputs, the future of the cd player looks bleak..it's the age of SSD's now.. I do believe that the new 300Gb disks will open doors for retail game developers.. Blu ray players writers and disks will drop in price making it more economical to make larger games even for pc

imagine how long it will take to write 300GB to disk.

when copying that kind of data already takes a while

I would imagine it useful to back-up mounds of commercial data :dunno:

But for domestic use, no one will be bothered. Unless it comes INCREDIBLY cheap...

Well Blu ray has been around for some time now and I don't think it has taken off as a storage medium. Well I don't know anyone that uses them. But then again they're still not very affordable to the average person:fencelook:
