Hi all

I have a 2016 318i out of motoplan. I took my car for an oil service at bmw and the following day my car was smoking out the exhaust (white smoke), drove about 6 km at gave me a msg that my engine was overheating i must pull over and so i did, let it cool down and drove back home, later that day i started the car and it gave me drivetrain msg, so i decide to take the car back for diagnostic at BMW, they checked it and told me they have to replace the turbo and quoted me R63k...R63k... cz apparentlythey have to replace the turbo, anyways i told the car and one or the driver suggested i go to a dealer near by which is owned by a guy who worked for BMW for 16years. This guy did his diagnostic and found the the actuator is stuck or something about the engine not recognizing if the wastegate is open or closed so he said he would replace the actuator, he called bmw amd they quoted the actuator R7k. Anyways took my car backbto jhb and yesterday i went and did another diagnostic, the guy helping found the same thing again with the turbo and he suggested we should change it, so i just wanted to know if anyone has any advise on this, should we change the whole turbo or is it the wastegate actuator that it a problem.

Also the car is smoking when starting up also when the accelerator is pressed. Could that be a sign of more issues or is that just the turbo failing

Assuming the smoke is not from the engine, it is a seal in the turbo unit itself. Reconditioning the turbo may be a cost effective option. I am not convinced just changing the wastegate actuator will solve this problem. Others more experienced with this may have better info.

hallo, first off, how long ago did you buy this car? Did you buy it recently ? Your first time sending for a service ?

If yes to first service, chances are oil was passing through somewhere and oil additives might have been added to hide this fault, after the flush and oil change these additives not working anymore caused the oil to pass and showing signs of smoke. ( similar happened to me )

From my understanding the actuator will only cause either high , low or no boost , but not smoking , the smoke you see is probably oil( should be able to smell it ) and it can either be the turbo or the rings or the valve stem seals, I would start at the turbo. These three cylinder engines has a tendency of blowing turbo's

Hi i bought the car as a second hand in 2020 from bmw, it has all the service history.

I called BMW and asked for another diagnostic so that i can get a clearer understanding of what is wrong because it seems as if there are many possibilities of what might be wrong, i will update on monday
