2014 f30 320d consumption

So as some will know i do this trip monthly and is a good comparison over a distance to the different vehicles i drive (have driven).
The best i have ever had was the 2013 f30 320d that managed a 4.2l/100km first stretch and ending with 4.4l/100km at the end.
Last time out it was the f30 328i 2litre petrol car that ended at 6.0l/100km.
Enter 2014 F30 320d auto 8speed that now has the coasting feature and running on Sasol 10ppm diesel.
We leave Vereeniging, set to ECO PRO because coasting only works on this setting, and set speedocruise to 105km/h as the road has a legal limit of 100km/h. It's all about the car i am just a passenger now.
After 66km at an average of 100.2km/h i have to take an image because i have never been in a car that can register 3.9l/100km.

I carry on to Potch and that consumption continues till i get to the Potch mall and consumption now reads 3.8l/100km at ave. 97.9km/h.

Head towards Klerksdorp with a 10km stretch of 80km/h before road becomes 120km/h.We stop at first traffic lights in Klerksdorp and see 3.9l/100km ave. speed 94.0km/h.The Potch town of 12 traffic lights and the 10km stretch of 80km are responsible for the average that has dropped.

Go do some shopping, visit and head back.
We get back having gone back up (Klerksdorp is 300mts altitude lower than Vereeniging)and end with a distance of 272km at 4.2l/100km.

The car shows a range is available of 1357km.
This test shows how frugal the F30 320d is,that 10ppm diesel cannot be all that bad,and that the 2litre diesel is 30% lighter on fuel usage than the 2litre petrol car.
As far as comfort goes,it's the same for all the F30's except for the Hybrid i had that was a Sportline and stands out all on it's own as the most comfortable.

Thanks for the update. So can we say that 10ppm gives better consumption with the sacrifice of performance

So at the end of the day, you pick, 30% better consumption or 30% more revs LOL!

Nice test!

This is going to be hard to beat. The first 600km on this car was done with only town driving and registered 5.0 l/100km.Here i think some of the smaller turbo diesels might have a chance, but when it gets to open road cruising at the higher speeds i will back the F30 320d anyday.

A friend of mine has the polo bluemotion TDI, he mentions crazy low figures of 3.1 litres per 100km on the highway.

But for the extra weight the 320d carries its brilliant!

wow thanks for that info. For a car 500kg lighter that has to be possible. Technology is brilliant.

WOW. I cant get my 320d F30 down to those levels.
cruising from JHB down to KNZ with the cruise control set at 135 I could only get 5.4l/100km

I don't see that dropping the speed to 100km/h would drop the consumption to +-4l/100.

Well at 100km/h my 320i f30 sits at 5.5l/100km and at 130km/h 6.8l/100km.

Maybe give it a try

That being said, I prefer not to drive 100km/h

Doing the same trip gives you a chance to compare. My car has the 19inch rims and tyres and i decided to put on the 18inch i have spare and see what that does to fuel economy.
Above you will see after 121km the 19 inch produced 3.9l/100km.
With the 18 inch the same sort of distance, average speed etc. the figure turned out at 3.8l/100km.

I actually expected the difference to be bigger so it's nice to know the larger diameter wheels do not cost you all that much.

Excellent post Phantom!
I will be in the market for a 2013 F30 320d A/T early next year , so doing my homework from now.
Maybe I missed it but please advise on more info on your vehicle , is it Sportline, luxury or M- Sport (would this even matter?)
What is the coasting feature?
What would be your consumption in heavy traffic? Our offices are moving to Sandton so I will have to deal with ugly traffic.
Do all F30 320ds come with the stop/start engine function?

Thanks in advance

Call me pedantic, but I find the OBC to be inaccurate.

Specially when one claims of good (or bad) consumption, the only accurate measure is actual usage of fuel.

Have a look at my economy thread: HERE

As you will see the OBC recorded 3.6, but actual figure was 3.8.

I know we talking about minuscule differences, but when you looking at a long distance covered they really make that extra difference. :tiptoe:
