2012 F30 335i - Could it need a new battery??

HI Guys,

Just wanted some information and opinions of the greater forum community with regards to what I've experienced with my car over the weekend.

I started the car on Saturday evening and all was fine. Drove +- 80km to a petrol station and filled up. Tried to start the car and there was just a strange ticking sound and it never started. All the normal ignition lights, radio, headlights etc worked, but just wouldn't start. I then got a battery discharge message during the 4th or 5th attempt to start it.

Arranged jumper cables and jumpstarted the car from the terminals in the engine bay and it started. Drove over 300km back home with no issues everything was normal.

Switched off once parked in the garage and tried to start it immediately and it wouldn't. Same as at the filling station.

My questions are:

1. Is it something as simple as needing a new battery? (Current battery can't provide enough power to start the car) Even though there has been no previous low battery warnings.

2. Will jump starting the car again cause any damage?

3 . Is there a possibility of a more serious problem? (I should mention that i drove +- 60km on gravel road on the day before this happened, but the car started post the gravel trip.)

Appreciate all feedback. Thanks

Hey bud. I would first get the battery tested before buying a new one as we all know they are expensive. Maybe it just needs and overnight charge.

Get the codes read before replacing anything, assuming this is the original battery it could be the culprit

First options to check would be the battery and alternator.

If you can get to the hidden menu, you can check the battery voltage prior to starting, during starting and after starting ( with a boost).

I stand corrected, but before starting voltage should around 12V ( give or take), if voltage drops below a certain value when cranking, it won't turn ( cant remember this value, but somewhere around 10V),

when idling it should be around 14V ( give or take)

Thanks for the responses guys.

Turns out it was the battery. Replacement 658 battery installed and all is well again.

Who replaced the battery, I hope that you had the new battery registered to the car so that the alternator can adjust to it......

Yes very important to register it. Our cars are power hungry and always it's the battery that gets buggered. I bought me one of those smart chargers and it works like a bomb. I work abroad and a few days before I arrive home my son connects the charger .

Will a new battery work without registering it? And if so, does it mean it will work (as in start the car, etc.) but will not be charging via the alternator which will then mean the battery draining very quick?

And when you say you charge it via a smart charger, I assume that is while the battery is still connected in the car?

Took the car to Tune Tech to diagnose so they changed the battery. I would assume that they did all the necessary coding/registering. Everything seems in order though.
