Howzit guys.

Looking for some input please. Having a issue on my 320d.

On idle all is well temp sits at 88°c but when driving it soon goes above 90°c. It's always gone to 88 °c and stayed there. Now on Friday cruising between dbn and PMB the temp was hopping between 84-95. It reached 95 when stopped on the highway for an accident so slow stop start traffic. Today going from pmb to dbn I reached 80° from 88. And going up Hills, I reached 97. Funny thing is as soon as you floor it. Temp comes down to 84 again.

I know flooring it is not the best of ideas but did the trick. When the car is parked tho it stays at 88-89. I didn't have any lights or anything come on the dash, fan didn't kick in either. This was checking with torque pro.

Seems like it has something to do with the load the car is under coz high speed low throttle it's fine. Low speed medium-high throttle is an issue.

Any input?
Much appreciated all.

On the BMW cars the temp needle is actually supposed to stay in the middle of the gauge although the actual temperature will fluctuate quite a bit as yours does. No need to worry, it is supposed to vary. When i replaced the waterpump and thermostat on my son's E46 328i recently i fitted my dongle thinghie and torque on my tablet and got the actual readings and found the same as you. The needle on the car's gauge stayed in the centre as it should. I noticed on the F25 X3 that i am now driving that the water temp gauge has been replaced by an oil temp gauge which varies nogal guite a bit when driving. It hovers just below 100 degrees but goes up to 100 when it is hot outside or when the engine is working harder than during normal cruising.

Howzit. Thanks for your reply.

It is a bit strange that this should happen. I have been checking my temps for the last 6 months tho and it was never above 90 even on hot summers days. This is a new thing and I don't think it is right.

Thanks again
Kind regards

Did you change the brand/spec of oil when doing an oil change?

Howzit. Thanks for the reply.

I've always only used BMW or oil as this seems best to me. I just don't want to leave it and mess up my head or something.

Thanks

Sorry for the hijack - but how does one see the temp on the E90 320d?
One can monitor the coolant temp/engine temp via the hidden OBC function.

Just Google how to access the hidden menu and scroll through the options

There's two ways @Silverbird_96kw

Option 1 - Bluetooth Adapter (The Easy Method)

Buy a Bluetooth OBD1 Adapter and use the Torque app to monitor the temperature on your Phone/Tablet

Option 2 - Hidden Menu

To access these hidden menus you have to:

*Turn ignition on, or start your car
*Press and hold the button to reset the daytrip/odometer for 10 seconds

At this point the OBC should display data in a "XX.YY" format.

e.g. If the BC displays "01.00", that means Main Menu 01, sub menu 00 To toggle between the menus, you need to use again the odometer button:

*While the display reads XX.__ press the button repeatedly to select the main menu option (XX) when reaching the desired main menu option,
*wait for 2 second for the display to read XX.00, at this time pressing the button will select the sub menu (YY)
*To go back to selection of a main menu (XX), press and hold the button for 2 seconds, until it shows XX.__ again.
*To leave the hidden/service menus press and hold the button for 10 seconds, or remove the key.

NB: this method will not keep the display permanently meaning every time you start your car you will need to go through the whole process again.

Howzit fanatics,

Thought i would bring this back up. I really didnt like the fluctuations as i mentioned above, a while back i decided to just spend the cash, replaced the waterpump, thermostat, thermostat housing, water bottle, and the flange under the intake as it was leaking. After filling up with a full flush and fresh coolant the temp went to 89 and stayed there, no matter if you are pretending to be in F1 or miss daisy.

2 weeks ago with our hectic heat in kzn, it started again. Temps pick up from 89 to 98, over about 15 seconds, then suddenly drops to 82/83, then evens out again at 89/90. Strange thing i have noticed, when you stop at a robot and the temp is at say 94, it stays there, does not fluctuate.

No water usage at all, there was once temp reached 99 degrees, the next morning it needed about 150ml water.

I went to get some brake pads and got a free scan for codes while waiting for the parts, nothing popped up. . .

I havent had any warnings on the dash as yet but i really dont like the fluctuations. To me it seems like the thermostat stays closed for too long, then suddenly shoots open. Anyone else seeing the logic behind this or am i looking for a problem that doesnt exist.

Ive been monitoring temps with torque pro, and ktmp on the dash. Exactly the same thing.

I dont want to be dropped next to the highway for something that couldv'e been avoided, especially something as small as a thermostat.

She has started feeling a bit sluggish going up hills lately, especially under load, but that could just be me.

Any thoughts, or should i stop scratching an itch that doesnt exist.

Thanks all
